POSITION SUMMARY
This role is situated within the Department of Corrections Headquarters. The incumbent will act as a principal advisor and special assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Corrections.

This position is integral to the DPS&C Leadership Team, contributing to strategic planning, policy formulation, problem-solving recommendations, and oversight of projects in administrative management.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

This position may be filled through a detail of a permanent classified employee of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections – Corrections Services. It is important to note that this role is not available for permanent placement.


QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree along with five years of professional experience in either a public or private sector environment is required.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six years of full-time work experience in any field may substitute for the required bachelor’s degree. Candidates lacking a bachelor’s degree may combine work experience and college credits as follows:
- A maximum of 120 semester hours may be combined with experience to substitute for the bachelor’s degree.
- 30 to 59 semester hours will substitute for one year of experience towards the degree.
- 60 to 89 semester hours will substitute for two years of experience towards the degree.
- 90 to 119 semester hours will substitute for three years of experience towards the degree.
- 120 or more semester hours will substitute for four years of experience towards the degree.

Additionally, college credits earned without obtaining a bachelor’s degree may substitute for a maximum of four years of full-time work experience towards the degree.

Candidates with 120 or more semester hours of credit, but without a degree, must also possess at least two years of full-time work experience to substitute for the bachelor’s degree.

Graduate training in any field may substitute for a maximum of one year of the required experience based on thirty semester hours for one year of experience. A master’s degree in any field will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate training with less than a Ph.D. will substitute for a maximum of one year of the required experience. A Ph.D. in any field will substitute for two years of required experience.


FUNCTION OF WORK:
To serve as the special assistant and advisor to the Secretary, performing a diverse range of complex management duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Administrative direction from the Secretary

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional or direct supervision over any department staff as assigned by the Secretary.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Only one Senior Management Consultant per agency. This position may only be filled by detail or as a four-year job appointment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as an advisor to the Secretary on agency matters.
- Conduct high-level executive program reviews and audits for the Secretary concerning agency policies and management, program operations, and services provided.
- Assume interim supervision and direction of major offices as needed.
- Collaborate and engage with executive and high-level officials of other state entities regarding agency programs, priorities, and operational activities.
- Undertake or direct special program reviews, audits, or studies at the Secretary's request; recommend departmental initiatives and implement corrective actions.
- Act as a liaison with other agencies and governmental bodies concerning interagency initiatives.
- Represent the Secretary internally and externally on departmental matters, including fiscal activities and agency policy and procedural matters.
