Job Title: Domestic Transportation Manager

Big Lots is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Domestic Transportation Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our inbound and outbound freight network. As a key member of our transportation team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of freight to our business, while optimizing costs and improving customer service.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and coordinate all inbound and outbound scheduling and communication, resourcing, staff scheduling, and team development.
  • Oversee the management of the trailer fleet, Distribution Center (DC) yards, and Yard Management System.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of transportation processes and plans, including robust metrics to deliver continuous improvement in service, cost, and people.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure transportation strategies and plans are aligned to business objectives.
  • Drive day-to-day performance excellence, including customer deliveries, network transfer orders, transportation compliance, systems, route guides, freight rating and payment discrepancies, and carrier EDI.
  • Lead staff by building talent, establishing credibility, planning and organizing, driving change, and delivering performance.
  • Manage all aspects of dedicated carrier performance through the management staff of the carriers.
  • Plan, organize, and complete analysis on dedicated carrier financial and service opportunities, monitoring and controlling expenses to meet or beat financial plans and targets.
  • Oversee ongoing carrier relationships, collaborating with the Transportation carrier management team in selection, negotiations, and management of carriers to deliver high service levels and maintain cost-effective freight rates.
  • Coordinate communications for the transportation department between vendors, carriers, and various internal contacts to guarantee coordination of effort.
  • Guide the development of all optimization parameters and models to assess and evaluate transportation costs.
  • Manage all scheduling and related communications to DCs, stores, and carriers.
  • Ensure the most cost-effective DC to stores alignment, making periodic adjustments and coordinating related communications.
  • Coordinate research to verify and resolve delivery complaints.
  • Manage green/carbon footprint shipper requirements and reporting to ensure adherence and yearly renewal of certificate.
  • Prepare and analyze various reports to ensure proper operation of the delivery system.
  • Develop and distribute standard operational procedures that must be followed on all shipments.
  • Establish and carry out transportation shrink control disciplines and programs.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation and/or Logistics or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Four to seven years leadership experience within a transportation management system environment with integrated systems required.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Strong working knowledge of Manhattan Transportation Management systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including independent decision-making and ability to maintain confidentiality required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skills demonstrated in analytical, organizational, project management, and time management.
