POSITION SUMMARY:


The Veterinary Clinical Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive veterinary and administrative services within the realm of laboratory animal care, supporting biomedical research initiatives, and facilitating educational programs.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures the provision of direct veterinary care or oversees its availability.
Formulates and executes protocols for disease prevention and diagnosis.

Advises and trains researchers on animal health management, infection control, model selection, anesthetic administration, and surgical planning.

Engages with research teams to offer expert insights and recommendations during project conceptualization.

Delivers specialized diagnostic services, including the assessment of animals, tissues, and bodily fluids to identify pathogens, abnormalities, injuries, or research-related issues.

Collaborates with administrators, faculty, animal care personnel, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to assess facilities and practices, recommending effective animal care and management systems.

Conducts veterinary evaluations of IACUC protocols.
Provides professional veterinary guidance and oversight for animal research facilities associated with the institution.

Assists in the management of the animal care and use program to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

Maintains thorough knowledge of regulatory guidelines and laws to identify any non-compliance in animal care and use practices.

Contributes to the development of training programs and participates in educating staff who work with animals to meet regulatory and accreditation training requirements.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medicine Doctoris (VMD) from an accredited institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) or equivalent certification, along with specialized training in laboratory animal medicine.

Must possess a current veterinary license in the relevant state or be eligible to obtain one within a specified timeframe. Controlled substance licensure is also required. USDA accreditation is preferred. Board certification in laboratory animal medicine by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or eligibility for certification is highly desirable. A valid Driver's License is mandatory.

Successful completion of a background check and clearance from relevant authorities is required for access to specialized facilities.


SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Experience in independent or collaborative research and the ability to organize and lead significant research projects is preferred.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including proficiency in presentations.
Capability to operate vehicles for the transportation of animals and equipment for specialized projects.

WORKING HOURS:

This position may require work beyond standard hours and will involve shared on-call responsibilities during evenings, weekends, and holidays with other veterinary staff.
