Job Overview

SUMMARY:

The Advanced Perioperative Registered Nurse II delivers expert nursing care by employing the nursing process to attend to patients within a designated unit. This role involves coordinating care across the healthcare facility and collaborating with fellow healthcare professionals to address the comprehensive needs of patients. Engaging in patient education is a key responsibility, alongside supervising and guiding ancillary staff. The nurse may also assume the role of Charge Nurse when designated.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Employs the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation, to ensure optimal use of departmental resources for patient care, comfort, and safety. Prioritizes and organizes the delivery of holistic nursing care as part of the healthcare team.

2. Works in partnership with physicians to establish medical management plans, patient objectives, and necessary nursing interventions.

3. Exhibits clinical expertise in directing or delivering nursing care tailored to the assigned department. Capable of managing workload changes and initiating emergency protocols that require independent judgment.

4. Advocates for patient rights by upholding confidentiality, privacy, safety, and patient education, while actively collaborating with the healthcare team to support the patient's best interests.

5. Takes responsibility for assigned tasks and their completion within designated work hours, maintaining accurate time records and working independently with minimal oversight.

6. Facilitates the orientation of new staff members as necessary and serves as a clinical resource for other RNs, LVNs, Techs, and NAs/CNAs. Delegates nursing responsibilities to RNs, LVNs, and ancillary personnel based on their educational background and expertise.

7. Upholds and promotes adherence to hospital and unit policies, procedures, and the Nurse Practice Act.

8. Demonstrates proficiency in resource management and safe equipment utilization, contributing to cost control through effective management of time, resources, and supplies.

9. Responsible for the administration and management of narcotics and medications, including parenteral and blood components.

10. Participates in at least 75% of unit staff meetings annually, ensuring accountability for reviewing meeting minutes. Engages in conferences and educational programs as required, contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

11. Cross-trains in an additional unit or area within one year of hire, as staffing allows. Willing to float to other areas with documented competency during scheduled shifts.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

1. Assesses and provides care for geriatric patients, demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills relevant to the aging process.

2. Assesses and cares for pediatric patients, applying knowledge and clinical skills related to growth and development.

3. Maintains and enhances professional skills through ongoing education and participation in hospital in-service training.

4. Holds accountability for personal practice and for nursing care delegated to peers, LVNs, NAs/CNAs, and other ancillary staff.

5. Utilizes the chain of command for issues requiring resolution beyond one’s authority.

6. Demonstrates knowledge and the ability to apply ethical and legal principles in practice.

7. Communication:

  • Effectively communicates relevant aspects of patient care to other members of the healthcare team.
  • Documentation in patient records is problem-oriented, providing relevant, factual, and accurate information.
  • Ensures all documentation in patient records is legible, dated, timed, and signed with title.

8. Fosters positive and compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.

9. Welcomes and incorporates constructive feedback into nursing practice.

10. Promotes safety standards, identifying risk situations and intervening appropriately.

11. Demonstrates clinical competence through successful completion of annual standardized procedure certifications and maintains current knowledge of Standard Precautions regarding Bloodborne Pathogens.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The RN II is responsible for shift assignments and managing emergency situations.
  2. The Department Manager or Director oversees long-term scheduling, performance evaluations, and quality management related to patient care and in-service needs.
  3. The RN II ensures appropriate resource utilization during shifts.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

1. Previous clinical experience in a patient care environment is preferred, with successful completion of orientation and training to achieve competence.

2. Familiarity with hospital and nursing policies and procedures, as well as the functions of other departments within the facility.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  1. Must possess current licensure to practice registered nursing in the State of California.
  2. Current AHA BLS certification is required upon hire. ACLS and PALS certifications are required as per departmental guidelines, to be completed within the provisional period.

Newborn, Infant/Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric All x No Patient Care

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Manual dexterity with fine motor skills to operate and handle departmental equipment.

2. Ability to lift 25 pounds and perform tasks involving lifting, turning, and transferring patients.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, with a strong desire to learn job functions outlined in the job description. Must work collaboratively as part of a team to achieve common goals and maintain effective working relationships.

SCHEDULING AND AVAILABILITY:

  1. Scheduling is determined by patient care needs and may include weekends, holidays, nights, and on-call duties.
  2. Working every other weekend is a minimum requirement.
  3. Shift and on-call assignments may be adjusted based on departmental needs.
  4. In case of staff emergencies, flexibility to work alternate shifts or rotating schedules may be required.
