We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our ITS Administrative Systems team at the University of Texas at Austin. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in modernizing our mainframe environment to support the university's goal of becoming the world's highest-impact public research university.
Key Responsibilities- Provide advanced operational support for mainframe systems, including monitoring, customer service, issue investigation, and software patching.
- Support and enhance mainframe developer tools, such as Natural on the Web, Task Manager, and UTQA.
- Research and analyze technical problems, design, develop, and document software solutions with a focus on maintainability and reduction of technical debt.
- Integrate systems with functionality interoperability and participate in pilot projects and solution analyses to evaluate and implement new integration tools for university developers to access mainframe data and business logic.
- Communicate effectively with clients across campus and perform other related functions as assigned.
- Three years of systems design, analysis, and programming or developing mainframe applications.
- Production experience with configuration and optimization of enterprise-level services/applications.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, test, and debug complex code.
- Strong customer-facing and listening skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to design systems for high availability, security, manageability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a team-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Production experience administering a mainframe environment such as z/OS.
- Production experience developing applications in the UT Container Management Platform (CMP) or in other Kubernetes-based environments.
- Production experience developing in Natural.
- Production experience interacting with Adabas.
- Production experience implementing applications and solutions on AWS.
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL.
- Knowledge of Python, Django, PHP, or similar toolset.
- Experience with software build tools and version control.
The University of Texas at Austin offers a competitive salary range of $110,000 + depending on qualifications, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including health benefits, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance options, paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays, and a defined benefit retirement plan.
