About the Role

As a Cardiac Sonographer at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to patients. This position requires a strong foundation in cardiovascular sonography, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate patient throughput and enhance patient satisfaction with the testing process.
  • Review and verify physician orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify patients using multiple methods and explain procedures to be performed.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and maintain a secure environment.
  • Notify transport personnel in a timely manner, and transport patients as needed.
  • Review patient charts, including medical history and clinical diagnosis, to inform echo studies.
  • Recognize significant clinical information and historical facts that may impact echo study results.
  • Position patients to optimize test results and utilize appropriate transducers/equipment.
  • Monitor patients for signs of complications or intolerances and notify nurses/physicians promptly.
  • Record measurements and perform mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Enter correct patient information and demonstrate proficiency in performing ultrasound procedures.
  • Learn new modalities as they become available and provide best image quality within resource limitations.
  • Delineate normal and abnormal anatomic structures, physiology, and hemodynamics.
  • Recognize examination findings requiring immediate clinical response and notify interpreting physicians.
  • Archive and retrieve studies, and provide proper care and use of digital echo systems.
  • Troubleshoot minor problems and contact HIS coordinators for system issues.
  • Log procedures for charging purposes and ensure the Cardiology Office receives logs prior to the end of the day.
  • Assume accountability for all actions in the workplace and report errors promptly.
  • Act as an effective patient/family advocate and respond to complaints in an appropriate manner.
  • Report complaints to managers in a timely fashion and utilize the chain of command to resolve issues.
  • Work cooperatively with staff and support new employees.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities as directed.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and mandatory educational sessions.
Requirements
  • Current ARDMS registry in Adult Echocardiography or successful completion of an ultrasound or cardiovascular technology program with verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in Echocardiography.
  • Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
  • New hires must pass the ARDMS or CCI credentialing exam within one year of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • One year of cardiovascular sonography experience preferred.
