As a Cardiac Sonographer at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality diagnostic imaging services to patients. This position requires a strong foundation in cardiovascular sonography, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.
Key Responsibilities- Facilitate patient throughput and enhance patient satisfaction with the testing process.
- Review and verify physician orders, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Identify patients using multiple methods and explain procedures to be performed.
- Protect patient confidentiality and maintain a secure environment.
- Notify transport personnel in a timely manner, and transport patients as needed.
- Review patient charts, including medical history and clinical diagnosis, to inform echo studies.
- Recognize significant clinical information and historical facts that may impact echo study results.
- Position patients to optimize test results and utilize appropriate transducers/equipment.
- Monitor patients for signs of complications or intolerances and notify nurses/physicians promptly.
- Record measurements and perform mathematical calculations accurately.
- Enter correct patient information and demonstrate proficiency in performing ultrasound procedures.
- Learn new modalities as they become available and provide best image quality within resource limitations.
- Delineate normal and abnormal anatomic structures, physiology, and hemodynamics.
- Recognize examination findings requiring immediate clinical response and notify interpreting physicians.
- Archive and retrieve studies, and provide proper care and use of digital echo systems.
- Troubleshoot minor problems and contact HIS coordinators for system issues.
- Log procedures for charging purposes and ensure the Cardiology Office receives logs prior to the end of the day.
- Assume accountability for all actions in the workplace and report errors promptly.
- Act as an effective patient/family advocate and respond to complaints in an appropriate manner.
- Report complaints to managers in a timely fashion and utilize the chain of command to resolve issues.
- Work cooperatively with staff and support new employees.
- Participate in performance improvement activities as directed.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and mandatory educational sessions.
- Current ARDMS registry in Adult Echocardiography or successful completion of an ultrasound or cardiovascular technology program with verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in Echocardiography.
- Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
- New hires must pass the ARDMS or CCI credentialing exam within one year of employment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
- One year of cardiovascular sonography experience preferred.
