Lead Automation Controls Engineer

Reports to the Director of Engineering

POSITION SUMMARY

A Lead Automation Controls Engineer leverages expertise in custom automation and precision engineering as part of a collaborative team comprising sales professionals, managers, designers, and builders to create exceptional automation solutions. These systems are specifically engineered for assembly, inspection, and testing across sectors that require meticulous assembly of their components. Key industries served include automotive, aerospace, defense, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, and industrial component manufacturing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee the design efforts for assigned projects under the guidance of the Director of Engineering, which typically encompasses:
  • Developing control systems designs and preparing detailed drawings using AutoCAD, including power distribution, PLC layouts, main and station panel designs, console layouts, pneumatics, hydraulics, and instrumentation.
  • Documenting and writing software.
  • Managing budgets and timelines, collaborating with the Project Manager to establish cost estimates and release schedules.
  • Coordinating with the Controls Assembly Department during project build phases to deliver timely and effective solutions to challenges.
  • Mentoring and guiding the Controls Design Department, including Level I and Level II Controls Engineers, through formal and informal training on products and software.
  • Creating preliminary project schedules.
  • After system power-up, troubleshooting software to ensure the machine is production-ready.
  • Actively participating as a team member during the project installation phase.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
  • Hardware: Proficient in PLCs such as Allen Bradley (CompactLogix, ControlLogix, SLC 500, PLC 5, MicroLogix), Siemens, and Square D systems.
  • HMI: Experience with Allen Bradley Panelview and Siemens TP, OP Series.
  • Communications: Knowledge of Allen Bradley Ethernet I/P, ControlNet, DeviceNet, and Siemens Profibus.
  • Variable Frequency Drives: Familiarity with Allen Bradley Powerflex and SEW Eurodrive.
  • Robotics: Experience with Denso, Epson, FANUC, Kuka, and Kawasaki systems.
  • Linear Actuators: Knowledge of Intelligent Actuator, Festo, Tolomatic, and Rexroth products.
  • Servos: Proficient in Allen Bradley Kinetics 6000 and Yaskawa systems.
  • Vision Systems: Experience with Keyence, Panasonic, Cognex, and DVT.
  • Data Acquisition: Familiarity with Keithley DAS systems.
SOFTWARE PROFICIENCIES
  • PLC Programming: Skilled in Allen Bradley RSLogix and Siemens Step 7.
  • HMI Development: Proficient in Allen Bradley FactoryTalk and Siemens ProTool.
  • Communications: Knowledge of Allen Bradley RSNetworks and RSLinx.
  • Robotics Programming: Experience with Adept V+, QuickBasic, Python, and C++.
  • Application Development: Familiarity with Visual Basic and National Instruments LabWindows.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering is preferred but not mandatory.
  • 7+ years of experience in controls engineering focused on custom automation.
  • A minimum of 3 years of design experience utilizing AutoCAD software is required.
SUPERVISORY ROLE

This position is responsible for leading and developing Level I and Level II Controls Engineers within the team on a daily basis.
