Job Overview

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a highly skilled Lead R&D Software Engineer to join our team in the Applied Research Laboratories. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead research and development efforts, coordinate with cross-disciplinary teams, and mentor junior engineers.

As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for coordinating the design, implementation, testing, and integration of real-time and data processing software applications. Your technical expertise and leadership skills will enable you to drive project objectives and milestones forward.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team to develop high-frequency tactical sonar systems, including display, hardware coordination, signal processing, algorithm design, and implementation.
  • Supervise and mentor junior and mid-level software engineers, fostering their growth and professional development.
  • Collaborate closely with project stakeholders and cross-functional teams to ensure project success.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • At least three years of experience developing software in C++ targeting a Linux environment.
  • Experience in leading teams, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate project requirements into achievable tasks.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with a willingness to work with principal investigators and customers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight years of experience developing software targeting a Linux environment, with two years in a lead developer role.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing multi-threaded, multi-process, and multi-machine computational software applications.
  • Experience with open-source build tools, such as CMake, and debugging and performance profiling tools.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux systems, network protocols, interpreted scripting languages, database concepts, and geospatial analysis.
