The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for delivering comprehensive medical care to a diverse patient population. The APP conducts independent assessments and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to ensure effective management of illnesses and injuries, as well as promoting disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. This role includes the authority to prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests, while also providing guidance to patients regarding their ongoing care.

The APP will operate within the oncology service line, focusing on delivering care in both acute and outpatient settings.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conducts thorough physical examinations and detailed health histories.

2. Functions autonomously to perform age-appropriate assessments for patients.

3. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests based on the patient's specific needs.

4. Prescribes suitable pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options.

5. Implements interventions aimed at helping patients achieve or maintain physiological stability.

6. Assists in providing care in accordance with institutional, state, and federal regulations.

7. Monitors the effectiveness of treatment interventions.

8. Facilitates patient transitions within and between healthcare settings, including admissions, transfers, and discharges.

9. Collaborates with team members to make appropriate referrals.

10. Provides educational resources to support decision-making for staff, patients, and families.

11. Acts as a mentor and role model for healthcare staff.

12. Ensures standardization of advanced practice processes across patient care services and collaborative teams.

13. Integrates current knowledge of healthcare trends and technological advancements into practice.

14. Participates or leads hospital committees.

15. Co-leads teams in developing new services or improving strategic performance.

16. Adheres to university and departmental policies while safeguarding university assets.

17. Engages in survivorship and long-term care of patients post-treatment.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
1. Provides coverage for the Chemotherapy Treatment Unit (CTU) at main and satellite locations, including on-call responsibilities.

2. Delivers education to new and ongoing oncology patients.

3. Collaborates with physicians and other providers regarding patient care in the CTU and across all settings, including inpatient care.

4. Ensures accurate medical documentation.

5. Responds to emergencies or rapid response situations.

6. Coordinates patient transfers to appropriate specialists or facilities for continued care.

7. Works with pharmacy and nursing staff to enhance quality of care and efficiency for patients in the CTU.

8. Refers patients to support services as necessary.

9. Mentors nursing staff and nursing students.

10. Assists in managing family dynamics and coping strategies during various phases of patient care.

11. Promotes evidence-based nursing practices.

12. Participates in quality improvement and research initiatives.

13. Optimizes infusion center workflow by providing clinical care as needed (e.g., injections, assuming charge role).

14. Conducts monthly educational sessions for staff on relevant topics.

15. Performs patient triage to assess urgency for physician evaluation.

16. Manages symptoms related to oncological treatments.

17. Communicates daily with triage nurses regarding patients needing evaluation in the outpatient clinic.

18. May travel to various locations to provide care for new and follow-up patients, including same-day appointments and survivorship visits.

19. Collaborates with healthcare teams in the management of outpatient care.

20. Educates patients and families on disease processes, treatment options, outcomes, complications, medications, discharge planning, and lifestyle changes.

21. Ensures proper transfer of patient information and documentation to the healthcare team.

22. Participates in weekly operational committee meetings and other relevant discussions.

23. Collects data for program evaluation and engages in quality assessment activities.

24. Provides coverage to areas of need within the healthcare system.

25. Advocates for evidence-based nursing practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

Master's Degree or higher
Certification and Licensing:
Florida APRN license or Physician Assistant license

Graduate of a Master of Science in Physician Assistant program.

Graduate of a Master of Science in Nursing or higher program.

Board certification as an APRN from a nationally accredited organization (e.g., ANCC or AANP).

Board certification as a PA from the NCCPA.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification preferred.

Current BLS and ACLS certification.

CITI certification within three months of employment.

ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification upon hire or during orientation.

Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of relevant advanced practice nursing experience preferred.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in treating hematology/oncology, acute care, or ICU patients preferred.

Professional Development:
AOCNP certification within one year of employment.

Engages in a 360-degree peer review process.

Submits annual protocols to practice site.

Maintains national certification.

Attends one national conference annually.

Participates in monthly educational grand rounds or relevant in-house meetings.

Contributes to or authors articles as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize tasks under pressure while meeting deadlines.
