Job Summary

Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group is seeking a highly skilled Pathologist Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our anatomic pathology department, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional patient care and contributing to the overall efficiency of our laboratory and pathology practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Gross Examination and Surgical Pathology
    • Perform gross dissection of large and small surgical specimens, utilizing standard dissection protocols to identify and submit pathologic tissues for histological processing and evaluation.
    • Dictate accurate and precise gross descriptions for each specimen, ensuring high-quality documentation.
  • Instruction and Education
    • Provide instruction to pathology residents, fellows, and pathology assistant students in surgical and autopsy pathology, serving as a resource and mentor.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork
    • Collaborate with interprofessional team members to provide clinical expertise, exercising appropriate clinical judgment and supporting the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Quality and Safety
    • Review frozen section reports on a monthly basis for quality assurance, with final review and assessment by pathologists.
    • Collect cases for quality assurance retrospective review, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Ensure adherence to safety procedures and OSHA regulations, identifying opportunities for process improvement and contributing to meeting department and hospital targets for quality and safety.
  • Financial Stewardship
    • Utilize available work time effectively, assisting others and performing additional tasks as necessary to optimize productivity.
    • Work in conjunction with the department to reduce waste and promote financial stewardship, contributing to the growth and success of the organization.
  • Professional Development
    • Maintain personal professional development through membership in professional organizations, completing and updating the individual development plan (IDP) on an ongoing basis.
    • Seek opportunities to expand learning and further education, focusing on continual development and growth.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations section.
  • One year of clinical experience if program-trained, or three years of clinical experience if on-the-job trained.
  • Experience with computer systems and ability to operate multiple computer systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PA(ASCP) - Pathologists' Assistant (ASCP) certification within six months.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security.
Work Environment

This position requires working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with minimal supervision. The successful candidate will be able to adapt to multiple ongoing priorities, organize heavy work flow, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
