Job Summary

We are seeking a Middle School Chaplain to join our team at The Lovett School. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading weekly chapel services, supporting the planning and coordination of all-school chapels, and fostering a sense of belonging among students, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and lead weekly chapel services that are biblically rooted and reflect Lovett's Core Values, inclusivity, and are welcoming to all faiths.
  • Support and participate in the planning and coordination of all-school chapels as well as additional worship opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Foster a sense of belonging by working with Student Resource Groups to create opportunities for the community to learn about and observe important non-Christian holidays.
  • Act as an ambassador of Lovett's faith identity at all times.
  • Work to see everyone at Lovett, regardless of religious orientation or interest, as his/her charges; encourage and promote interfaith dialogue, sharing, and learning.
  • Participate in department, faculty, team, and grade-level meetings as required.
  • Offer confidential pastoral care to students, faculty, and staff, and/or make referrals to other professional counselors when requested or deemed necessary.
  • Respond to concerns regarding the spiritual life of the school.
  • As needed by divisional religion department, teach meaningful, academically substantive, and age-appropriate class(es), foster dialogue with other faith traditions.
  • Work with Head Chaplain and religion teachers to coordinate divisional bible study and service opportunities.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned, including responsibilities that may occur on weekends and evenings.
  • Serve on the all-school chaplaincy team and a divisional Administrative Team.
  • Provide immediate and ongoing emotional and spiritual support to the Lovett community in times of hardship or loss.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Divinity, Religious Studies, or related field.
  • Children/youth ministry background is preferred but not required.
  • Ordination status is flexible.
  • Experience designing and leading worship services.
  • A love of working with young people and a willingness to engage them as whole students, balancing care and compassion with challenge and accountability.
  • Socially skilled as an inviting gatherer who welcomes but does not obligate, organizes but does not control, is inclusive and sensitive.
  • Can navigate discussions with those of different belief systems with warmth and calm.
  • Must be able to function effectively and inclusively in a school environment while also exercising sound judgment in controlling disruptive and destructive influences that could fragment the community.
  • The drive, organization, and flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment, contributing to the school community beyond the classroom.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to facilitate effective communication with students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • A strong desire to work in a collaborative learning community, employing a growth mindset and participating in ongoing professional development during the school year and summer.
  • Desire and ability to develop an atmosphere of trust and knowledge of students as individuals.
  • Commitment to developing one's cultural self-awareness, cultural competence, and emotional intelligence.
  • Ethical behavior, professionalism, and regular and reliable attendance.
