Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Utility Construction Pipe Layer to join our team at American States Utility Services, Inc. As a key member of our construction team, you will be responsible for installing and maintaining water and wastewater systems on military installations throughout the United States.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform physical construction tasks, including digging ditches or trenches, backfilling excavations, and compacting earth to grade specifications.
  • Use mechanized pipe saws and differentiate blade types for project-specific requirements.
  • Cut PVC and DIP pipe to required lengths and bevel ends for installation.
  • Connect different pipe types and sizes, requiring knowledge of gaskets, lubrication, and proper installation methods.
  • Position, align, and lay out pipe routes, communicating with supervisors and foremen.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Install water and sewer pipe fittings, including PVC push-on fittings and ductile iron mechanical joint fittings.
  • Perform backfilling and compaction to meet backfill requirements, utilizing rammers and remotely controlled pneumatic compactors.
  • Install sewer manhole installations, including proper joint installation and joint wrap.
  • Set final trench grades by hand digging or using trenching tools.
  • Load, unload, identify, and distribute utility materials to the appropriate location, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year (1) of verifiable experience as a pipe layer.
  • Must work well with others and participate on a crew.
  • Ability to train, communicate, and aid others in pipe laying activities.
  • Working knowledge of general hand tools, power tools, and compaction equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License issued by the state where employed.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must take and pass Federal OSHA and or State Mandated Safety training with annual refresher courses as required by the associated regulations for this Position.
Physical Requirements
  • Work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry loads up to 50lbs and push or pull up to 75lbs.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Work in areas exposed to noise and chemicals.

Compensation Information

The compensation range provided is in compliance with state specific laws. Multiple factors are used to determine the actual starting rate of pay for all of our positions, including specific skills, years of experience, education, certification(s), and other job-related factors.
