POSITION SUMMARY

The Department of Transportation is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the role of Heavy Equipment Operator. Under the guidance of a Maintenance Supervisor, the selected candidate will be responsible for operating Category 2 machinery utilized by the maintenance unit. This position may involve independent work or collaboration with a team on various highway maintenance projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate and manage Category 2 machinery assigned to the unit.
  • Engage in essential highway maintenance tasks, including but not limited to paving, grading, mowing, and cleaning ditches.
  • Maintain equipment through cleaning, minor repairs, and regular servicing.
  • Keep accurate records related to time, equipment checks, and material usage.

Travel may be required for training or work-related activities. The operator may also be called upon to handle Class A equipment during emergency situations or peak workloads, provided they possess the necessary qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must hold a valid Class B commercial driver's license with a Tank Vehicle endorsement. Experience as a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker within the California state service is preferred, although alternative qualifications may be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Successful completion of a drug screening.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
