Job Title: Senior Attorney

Join the City of New York's Bureau of Law & Adjustment as a Senior Attorney and play a critical role in settling and adjusting claims filed against and on behalf of the City.

Job Summary

The Senior Attorney will be responsible for evaluating, negotiating, and settling pre-litigation claims and pending litigation on behalf of the City and its agencies. This role requires strong analytical and communication skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and negotiate pre-litigation claims and pending litigation to achieve the best possible outcomes for the City.
  • Assess risk and make informed decisions based on the facts presented and relevant law.
  • Prepare complex legal memoranda to request settlement authority beyond delegated limits.
  • Participate in settlement negotiations and appear in court as required.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, providing guidance and support to ensure successful case outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Deputy Director on data analytics and related initiatives.
  • Support the Director and Deputy Director with staff assignments and day-to-day operations of the Litigation Unit.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience performing complex legal work subsequent to admission to any bar.
  • Demonstrable supervisory experience over other attorneys/legal staff in an administrative, managerial, and/or executive capacity.
