Position Summary
Per Diem Respiratory Therapist
As a vital member of the healthcare team, you will be accountable for the clinical assessment of patients and the provision of respiratory care services as needed. Your role will include engaging in initiatives that promote the importance and visibility of the registered respiratory therapist.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver respiratory assistance for patients utilizing ventilators (adult, pediatric, and neonatal) by observing, assessing, and making informed clinical decisions.
Criteria A: Administer therapeutic interventions with a comprehensive understanding of pathophysiology and indications for treatment. Take necessary actions if therapy is contraindicated or if adverse effects arise. Employ specialized monitoring techniques such as ECG, physiological data, laboratory results, ventilator graphics, arterial lines, and End-tidal CO2 when available to inform patient care decisions.
2. Implement Respiratory Care protocols. Assess and provide recommendations regarding the therapies administered.
Criteria A: Evaluate, prepare, and educate patients. Conduct basic assessments such as auscultation of breath sounds, pulse checks, respiratory patterns, color evaluation, cough, and sputum analysis to determine therapy appropriateness. Suggest therapy adjustments as necessary. Care provided includes, but is not limited to, therapeutic and diagnostic administration of medical gases, humidification and aerosols, medication delivery to the cardiorespiratory system, ventilator support, postural drainage, chest physiotherapy, vest therapy (HFCWO), breathing exercises, incentive spirometry, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and management of natural and artificial airways, including the insertion of artificial airways. Responsible for the execution of Respiratory Care protocols.
Criteria B: Contribute data for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) when assigned or when a specific need is identified. Ensure adherence to approved policies, procedures, and protocols.
Criteria C: Administer non-standard therapy modes after receiving appropriate training (including Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy).
3. Maintain accurate documentation of therapy.
Criteria A: Ensure timely and precise documentation of treatments in the patient's medical record. This includes detailed entries in the treatment card and the electronic health record.
4. Conduct pulmonary function testing and evaluations as required, including arterial blood gases, blood sample collection from indwelling arterial catheters, blood gas analysis, bedside spirometry, pulse oximetry, and titration, as well as measurement of ventilator volumes, flows, and pressures, and quality control for blood gas analyzers.
Criteria A: Execute tests accurately using established techniques.
5. Ensure the safe administration of mixed medical gases. Assist in maintaining inventory and readiness of ventilators.
Criteria A: Select and prepare appropriate equipment, implement therapy, and monitoring devices safely. Adhere to infection control policies, aseptic and sterile techniques, hand hygiene, and equipment changes. Maintain equipment safely, identify issues, and provide recommendations. Minimize waste and damage.
Criteria B: Support the ordering and stocking of equipment and perform pre-use checks of ventilators. Maintain a clean and organized working environment.
6. Complete annual competencies for various ventilators.
Criteria A: Ensure timely completion of competencies.
Criteria B: Assist in departmental competency training for both current staff and new hires.
7. Provide instruction to Respiratory and Nursing students, medical personnel, patients, and their families.
Criteria A: Communicate essential information based on scientific knowledge and clinical experience.
Criteria B: Document patient education in the electronic health record.
8. Perform additional duties as assigned.
9. Uphold all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
Additional Information:
Required: Associate's degree from an accredited Respiratory Care Program.
Minimum Experience: one year.
Licensure in the relevant state as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree.
Maintain Registry Credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Maintain state licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
