Redmond, Washington, United States SpaceX Full time
Overview

SpaceX, a pioneering space exploration company, is seeking an experienced Reliability Engineering Director to lead the development of high-reliability space systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in reliability engineering, leadership, and project management.

Job Summary

This role requires a seasoned engineer with expertise in designing and developing complex space systems that meet rigorous reliability requirements. The successful candidate will be responsible for building and leading a team of reliability engineers, defining reliability allocations across components and sub-systems, and implementing probabilistic modeling techniques for system reliability predictions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of reliability engineers to ensure high-reliability requirements are met for satellite constellations.
  • Define reliability allocations across all components and sub-systems to meet overall system goals and fault tolerance architecture.
  • Drive implementation of probabilistic modeling techniques for overall system reliability predictions, including Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Reliability Block Diagram analysis (RBD), and Single Event Upset / Multiple Bit Upset (SEU/MBU) analysis.
  • Apply environmental predictions from mission operation simulations to reliability prediction models.
  • Drive reliability analysis modeling throughout the design and development process.
  • Conduct Monte Carlo simulations for material, process, manufacturing, environment, and usage variations.
  • Implement performance testing and life testing strategies (HALT/HASS, ESS, ALT, RGT) as appropriate to identify, find, and fix design or process flaws.
  • Provide critical input to risk management plans for satellite launch, deployment, and operations.
Requirements
  • Masters in Reliability Engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in design for high-reliability space systems.
  • Previous work experience in electronic package design and qualification methodologies for silicon and custom ASIC packages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Reliability Engineering or a related field.
  • Technical expert in selecting technologies for state-of-the-art electronics.
  • Expert in reliability modeling and prediction methodologies.
  • Highly experienced in electronics manufacturing technologies, PCB materials and fabrication, component package types, and reliability comparisons.
  • Experienced in new product development with new technologies and driving evaluations, test, and verification for space systems.
  • Demonstrable expert knowledge and experience with reliability predictions for component package technologies (CSPs; LGAs / BGAs / CGAs, custom Die packages).
  • Experienced with GMW-3172, SMC-S-016.
  • Strong project management skills in coordinating teams to drive technology development and verification testing for reliability assessments under aggressive schedules.
  • Well-established knowledge in component-level/board-level physics of failure and reliability test methods, and correlation of reliability prediction tools with measured results.
  • Experienced with mechanism reliability prediction and space tribology.
Additional Requirements
  • Able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Estimated Salary: $200,000 - $250,000 per year
