Sterile Processing Technician I

The Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a highly skilled Sterile Processing Technician to join our team. As a Sterile Processing Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest level of patient care by processing and sterilizing medical instruments in compliance with medical center policies and procedures, state, local and federal requirements.
Responsibilities
Under general supervision of the department manager, shift supervisor or designee, the Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of instruments. This includes:
- Decontaminating and cleaning instruments to prevent the spread of infection
- Processing and sterilizing instruments to ensure they are safe for use
- Inspecting instruments to ensure they are in good working condition
- Documenting all activities and maintaining accurate records
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of processes. You must also be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and have basic computer skills. Within 12 months, you must successfully obtain certification in sterile processing from IAHCSMM. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high pressure health care environment required. Excellent interpersonal skills required. Detail oriented required.
Working Conditions
This position requires the ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking. You must also be able to climb stairs and work in confined/cramped spaces. Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted required. Ability to maintain vision 20/40 corrected required. Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance required. Ability to match or discriminate between colors required. Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception required. Good peripheral vision capabilities required. Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction required. Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements required. Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations required. Ability to work rotating shifts required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to work in a latex safe environment required. *Ability to maintain tactile sensory functions required. *Ability to maintain good olfactory sensory function required. *Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.
