Position SummaryThe Refugee Support Specialist plays a crucial role in facilitating the successful resettlement of refugees by providing essential pre-arrival and post-arrival services in accordance with established guidelines. This position collaborates with program staff to assist refugees in navigating local systems, accessing necessary resources, and achieving early self-sufficiency. Reporting directly to the Director of Refugee & Immigrant Services, the specialist is integral to the resettlement process.
QualificationsPreferred qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in social services, education, or a related field, along with two years of experience in refugee or immigrant social services. Candidates should possess excellent English communication skills, both spoken and written, along with strong organizational abilities and the capacity to meet strict deadlines. The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team, including case workers, employment specialists, and interpreters, is essential. Sensitivity to the cultural differences of clients and staff from various backgrounds is required. A functional vehicle and flexibility in working hours are also necessary.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesPre-Arrival Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with the Reception and Placement supervisor to ensure clients receive a warm welcome, including airport pickup, essential groceries, and seasonal clothing.
- Provide safety orientation to refugees upon arrival, ensuring they understand emergency procedures and feel secure in their new environment.
Post-Arrival Responsibilities:
- Deliver core services in line with funding guidelines, including home visits, assessments, lease signings, cultural orientation, and connecting clients to external resources such as government benefits and healthcare.
- Manage client funding allocations according to program guidelines, ensuring clients are informed about their expenditures.
- Act as a primary contact for non-life-threatening emergencies during the initial resettlement phase, addressing client needs promptly and effectively.
- Facilitate communication among team members regarding the agency's role in promoting client independence and self-sufficiency.
- Refer working-age adults to the employment team for job placement assistance.
- Assist clients in transitioning to necessary services after exiting resettlement support.
- Participate in intensive case management for vulnerable clients as needed.
- Ensure the use of interpretation services when required and verify that interpreters convey accurate information to clients.
- Advocate for culturally sensitive practices among various service providers, including education and healthcare.
Administrative Duties:
- Ensure compliance with U.S. Refugee Program documentation requirements through collaboration with refugee department staff.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with funding and agency standards.
- Engage in departmental meetings and planning sessions.
- Participate in professional development and training opportunities offered by the agency and external organizations.
- Take on additional responsibilities related to refugee services and overall agency operations as needed.
Translation and Interpretation (if applicable):
- Provide interpretation services for refugee clients in various settings, either in person or via phone.
- Adhere to confidentiality and interpreting guidelines as directed.
- Translate documents as requested by the supervisor.
