Afterschool Recreation Counselor Position

We are seeking a motivated and reliable individual to assist with supervising youth groups in an afterschool setting. The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth in a recreation or education setting and be able to attend a mandatory training on Saturday, August 17th.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with supervising a group of youth in after-school programs
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and leading recreation activities, including arts and crafts, sports, and games
  • Plan and collaborate with Sunnyvale School District personnel
  • Be flexible and able to respond to change
  • Take attendance and assist with record-keeping
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and program planning dates
  • Issue, maintain, and store equipment and supplies
  • Interact with children, parents, and caregivers
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants

Working Conditions:

The position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag, and push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required.

Requirements:

  • Counselor I: Minimum age is 16 years old
  • Counselor II: Minimum age is 17 years old
  • One (1) year or one (1) summer of experience

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision or in a team with other staff
  • Available for required trainings
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, or Farsi
  • One (1) year or (1) summer season of experience working with youth in a recreation setting
  • Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade or higher
  • Certified CPR/AED/First Aid

Licenses/Certifications:

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record or the ability to supply alternate transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
