Job Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Trial Attorney to join our Employment Law Section at the Department of Justice. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in defending the operations of state agencies and handling complex civil employment cases.

Salary Information

The estimated salary for this position is $113,000 - $175,000 per year, depending on experience.

Job Description
  • Handle all aspects of complex civil employment cases, including drafting and arguing motions, interviewing witnesses, conducting depositions and other discovery, preparing and arguing summary judgment motions, conducting expert discovery, and preparing for trial.
  • First- and second-chairing jury and bench trials.
  • Handling contested administrative evidentiary hearings before the State Personnel Board.
  • Defending agency administrative actions against petitions for writ of mandamus.
  • Drafting appellate briefs and arguing before the Courts of Appeal and Ninth Circuit.
  • Obtaining work safety and gun violence restraining orders.
Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Be an active member of the California State Bar.
  • Have 0-5 years of experience in litigation and trial practice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
