About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager to join our team at Western National Insurance Group / Umialik Insurance Company. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for managing the commercial underwriting function, driving profitable growth, and developing staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Implement Underwriting Strategies: Create and execute underwriting strategies to achieve a balanced, profitable, and quality book of commercial lines business.
  • Lead and Develop Staff: Select, coach, develop, and retain staff to achieve company, departmental, and individual goals.
  • Provide Technical Guidance: Act as a referral underwriter for underwriting staff, provide feedback and technical guidance as needed.
  • Market Opportunities: Develop strategies to seize market opportunities and manage the existing agency plan.
  • Network and Stay Informed: Network within the insurance community to stay abreast of marketplace changes and emerging industry issues.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Develop, review, analyze, and prepare periodic reports on assigned regional operations and take appropriate underwriting and rate action.
  • Process Improvement: Participate in initiatives to develop and improve processes and policies.
  • Policy Execution: Interpret and execute policies and guidelines, assign and approve authority levels, and execute policies within assigned authority level.
  • Problem-Solving: Apply knowledge to help solve problems of multifaceted scope and complexity, identify and analyze patterns from partial and/or conflicting data, and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Business Relationships: Develop and maintain highly effective business relationships with agents, as well as internal and external customers.
  • Special Projects: Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Industry Knowledge: Extensive knowledge and understanding of industry best practices, standards, and commercial lines underwriting concepts.
  • Problem-Solving and Multitasking: Ability to multitask and solve complex problems.
  • Leadership and Development: Demonstrated ability to coach, direct, and develop individuals, former experience in a leadership role.
  • Technical Skills: Intermediate skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, experience in ImageRight or similar file imaging work platforms, intermediate knowledge of CSC PointIn system or similar policy administration systems.
  • Education and Certification: Bachelor's degree in insurance or finance, experience in lieu of degree acceptable, CPCU, AU, or CIC certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Business Analytics and Underwriting: Strong skills in business analytics and commercial lines underwriting.
  • Relationship Building: Ability to build strong relationships.
  • Negotiation and Judgment: Strong negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to make sound judgment.
  • Initiative and Teamwork: Ability to take initiative, experience working in a team environment, and ability to be flexible and work through changes in a positive manner.
Compensation and Benefits

The full hiring range for this role is $118,580 - $154,110, annually. However, the base pay offered may vary depending on the job-related knowledge, skills, credentials, and experience of each candidate, as well as other factors such as the scope and location of the role.
