Colorado State University is seeking a highly skilled Historic Preservation Specialist to join our team at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. As a key member of our Center for the Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), you will play a critical role in preserving the cultural and historical heritage of our nation's military installations.

Job Summary:

The Historic Preservation Specialist will provide technical support to the Cultural Resources Management Program (CRMP) within the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) at Fort Liberty. This position requires a strong background in historic preservation, cultural resources management, and architectural history. The successful candidate will work closely with our team to review undertakings, inventory and evaluate historic properties, monitor and document building conditions, execute mitigation projects, and draft reports.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Architectural Historian in reviewing undertakings involving historic buildings, districts, and landscapes.
  • Survey unevaluated properties to identify potential historic buildings, districts, and landscapes, and draft survey reports as assigned.
  • Conduct research and write historical contexts for historic properties as assigned.
  • Document historic properties through photography, architectural drawing, and verbal description as assigned.
  • Evaluate the eligibility of properties for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as assigned.
  • Update the inventory of historic buildings, districts, and landscapes.
  • Monitor historic buildings, districts, and landscapes.
Requirements:
  • BS/BA in historic preservation, architectural history, public history, history, or a related field.
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant work experience in the areas of cultural resources management or historic preservation.
  • Detailed knowledge of current cultural resources management and historic preservation laws, policies, and practices.
  • Experience working with features of the built environment, including landscapes, structures, and buildings.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to establish priorities and coordinate multiple assignments.
  • Experience communicating technical information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite and Adobe suite.
  • Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license by the date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS/MA in historic preservation, architectural history, public history, history, or a related field.
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Historic Architecture, Architectural History, or History.
  • Highly qualified candidates will also demonstrate professional expertise in working with U.S. federal historic preservation laws and regulations that govern cultural resource management.
