Arborist II

Join Salt Lake City Corporation's Public Lands department as an Arborist II, responsible for performing specialized tasks related to tree care and maintenance.

As an Arborist II, you will be part of a team that ensures the health and safety of trees on property owned and/or maintained by Salt Lake City Corporation. Your duties will include:

• Leading a team of full-time and/or seasonal personnel as work assignments necessitate, providing training for safe job performance.
• Determining and using appropriate techniques for tree planting, maintenance, removal, and emergency services, including pruning, spraying, removal, planting, stump grinding, and delivery of emergency services.
• Operating and using specialized equipment, such as aerial lift equipment, stump cutters, chain saws, spraying equipment, trucks, loaders, backhoes, tree spades, and trailers, as required.
• Complying with safe working practices as defined in American National Standards for Arboricultural Operations ANSI Z133.1-2000 or latest approved revision.
• Making recommendations to crew supervisors concerning operational processes, equipment needs, technical information, tree status, and customer requests.
• Performing tasks at heights higher than 100 feet by manually climbing trees under the direct supervision of an Arborist III, Urban Forestry Field Supervisor, or City Forester.
• Operating and using a computer to input, update, and close service requests, work orders, and tree inventory records.

To be successful as an Arborist II, you will need:

• Three years of experience working as a member of a tree maintenance crew, or three years of related tree care experience, with at least six months of experience climbing trees.
• Knowledge of a wide variety of trees and proper methods, techniques, and practices used in the tree care industry for planting, maintenance, removal, and emergency services.
• Familiarity with tree industry personal protective equipment, climbing gear, and hardware, rigging tools, ropes, knots, bends, and hitches.
• Arborist Certification by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) within 12 months of hire.
• Ability to supervise and communicate with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
• Possession of a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class A with endorsement airbrakes and combination, or ability to attain within six months.
• Ability to obtain flagging certification within six months of hire.
• Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months of hire.

As an Arborist II, you will work in arduous physical conditions with exposure to heat exhaustion, falls from height, electrocution from electrical hazards, being struck by falling objects, and injury from power equipment. You will also work with medium-heavy weights, frequent pushing, pulling, or lifting of heavy weights, and be exposed to heights in excess of 100 feet, extreme weather conditions, and fumes, noise, dust, grease, electrical hazards, etc. The risk of bodily injury is considerable under normal conditions.

Intermittent exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior may also occur. Irregular and prolonged working hours will be required in peak sessions and emergency situations.
