Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Fixed Wing Pilot is accountable for the secure and effective management of flight operations. This role involves evaluating flight requests from the communications center and making informed decisions regarding acceptance based on environmental conditions and other safety considerations. Collaboration with the second-in-command and the medical flight team is essential for successful operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead flight operations as the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) for Boston MedFlight, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Oversee all aspects of flight operations, maintaining ultimate authority over aircraft safety and performance.
  • Prepare for flights by gathering necessary information on weather, operational procedures, and specific instructions.
  • Adhere to all relevant FAA regulations, operational manuals, and safety management protocols.
  • Conduct pre-flight briefings with medical, communication, and ground teams to ensure comprehensive flight preparation.
  • Evaluate weather conditions to determine flight assignment acceptance in accordance with operational guidelines.
  • Ensure aircraft readiness through thorough pre-flight inspections, including fueling and loading protocols.
  • Supervise the loading of passengers and cargo, ensuring compliance with weight and balance regulations.
  • Verify that all required safety equipment is onboard and properly secured.
  • Maintain accurate flight logs and ensure proper documentation of all flight-related activities.
  • Engage in post-flight debriefings to review operational performance and safety considerations.
  • Utilize Electronic Flight Bag technology for navigation and operational updates.
  • Report any potential safety violations or personal medical issues that may affect flight safety.
  • Maintain proficiency in flight operations, including regular simulator training and skill enhancement.
  • Participate in safety meetings and community outreach initiatives as directed.
  • Delegate responsibilities as necessary while retaining ultimate accountability for flight safety.
  • Assist with aircraft maintenance and cleanliness as operationally feasible.
  • Contribute to the development and assessment of aviation policies and procedures.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing operational safety and efficiency.
  • Foster positive relationships within the aviation team and broader health system.
  • Prioritize safety and operational excellence in all aspects of flight operations.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned by aviation leadership.
  • Be prepared for occasional overnight assignments and flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays.
  • Meet all security and licensing requirements as mandated by regulatory authorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 2,000 flight hours with a total of 3,000 hours preferred, including specific experience in multi-engine and night operations.
  • ATP license required, with a Class I FAA Medical Certificate.
  • Experience in emergency medical services is preferred.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position requires the ability to operate in diverse environments, including exposure to noise and extreme temperatures.
  • Physical capability to lift and assist with patient transport and aircraft operations.
  • Compliance with health and safety protocols is mandatory.
