Job Summary

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a key member of the nursing team, responsible for the control and utilization of resources, quality improvement activities, interdisciplinary problem solving, and implementation of policies and procedures. This role promotes professional growth through organizing educational activities, encouraging employee attendance at unit-based or hospital-wide committees, implementing quality improvement projects, and encouraging membership and participation in professional organizations.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, effective leadership, and an outstanding work ethic.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively (orally, in writing, and charting).
  • Serve as a mentor to other staff with an intimate working knowledge of SARRTP and IPU.
  • Act as facilitator to staff in conflict resolution and team building; promote positive interpersonal relationships among staff.
  • Solve problems, effectively and efficiently, using sound/rational judgement.
  • Effectively oversee Unit operations in absence of NM; shares with taking call (not to include personally staffing unit, unless desired).
  • Ensure ample staff coverage, take action to obtain assistance to cover unplanned leave and other scheduling issues; helps with general scheduling, if needed.
  • Manage the schedule for Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP).
  • Educate staff; orient new staff; facilitate experiences for nursing students.
  • Design, implement, and measure quality improvement monitors/activities.
  • Play a key role in the design and implementation of the SARRTP expansion project.
  • Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care.
  • Provide a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing.
  • Demonstrates consistent clinical competence in providing nursing care.
  • Demonstrate evidence of critical thinking skills in identifying, analyzing, and resolving problems on the unit.
  • Effectively function as the charge nurse, team leader, or in other leadership role.
  • Ensure that delegated tasks as assigned are completed by other staff.
  • Ensure the physician and/or the nurse manager/ immediate supervisor/coordinator are notified of untoward events.
  • Use a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve problems that result in improved outcomes.
  • The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.
  • Promote, advocate for and strives to protect the health, safety and rights of the patient.

  • Consult with co-workers and other disciplines.
  • Demonstrate leadership in safe work practices.
  • Conserve resources effectively by using supplies and equipment in a responsible manner.
Work Schedule

Rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays

Qualifications

The following Scope, Education and Dimension criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade.

The Dimension requirements (Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development and Evidence-Based Practice/Research) are detailed for each grade and level within the online assessment:

Grade/Level Scope Education Nurse I, Level I Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies.

An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional professional nursing required.

Nurse I, Level II Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills and technically competent practice in providing care to clients with basic or complex.

An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 1 ;OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional nursing experience required.

Nurse I, Level III Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self-directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations.

An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 2 years of professional nursing experience in which one year is equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2; OR a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the Nurse I, Level 2; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional professional nursing experience; OR a Master's degree in a *related field with a BSN and no additional professional nursing experience.

Nurse II Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

A BSN with 2 years of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR an MSN with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR a Master's degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience; OR a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN with no additional professional nursing experience.

Nurse III Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting.

MSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Master's degree in *related field with BSN and two years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Doctoral degree in Nursing with and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; OR a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs.

Requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective care. Requires the individual to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level or with the neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect him/herself from physically abusive patients.

Requires the individual to travel in an automobile for several hours at a time.
