Job Summary
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Structural Ironworker Leadman to join our team. As a key member of our construction team, you will be responsible for overseeing the assembly, erection, repair, and alteration of structural steel work, as well as directing and checking the work of assigned journeymen and helpers.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and direct the work of assigned Structural Ironworkers, ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest standards of quality and safety.
- Participate in planning and coordinating the work of assigned Structural Ironworkers, including the preparation of schedules and resource allocation.
- Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, provide guidance and training, and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
- Erect and dismantle structural steel members, including columns, beams, girders, trusses, and other steel components, in accordance with plans, specifications, and accepted standards.
- Operate machinery and equipment necessary for the fabrication and installation of structural steel parts, including power saws, drills, and welding equipment.
- Perform welding and cutting operations, including oxyacetylene and electric arc welding, to assemble and repair structural steel components.
- Requisition tools, equipment, supplies, and materials from the storeroom, ensuring that all necessary resources are available to support the work.
- Conduct work in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to established safety rules and practices, and ensuring that all team members are aware of and comply with safety protocols.
- Erect and dismantle portable scaffolding and rigging required for the work, ensuring that all equipment is properly secured and maintained.
Requirements
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, and two years of experience as a journeyman structural ironworker or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- One year of service with the District as an Architectural Ironworker or Structural Ironworker, and civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
Working Conditions
The successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise environments, and may be exposed to noxious odors and other hazardous conditions. The candidate must be able to work in all types of weather conditions and be physically fit to perform the duties of the position.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of structural ironwork, including the use and care of tools, machines, and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the trade.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to review and code timesheets, electronic time off requests, and maintain vacation schedules online.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
- Ability to work from sketches, plans, and specifications, and to do oxyacetylene and electric arc welding.
