About the Position

The Otay Water District is seeking a skilled Meter Maintenance Worker to join our team. As a Meter Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for installing, reading, removing, repairing, inspecting, and testing potable and recycled water meters. The ideal candidate will have experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and maintenance of mechanical and/or electronic equipment or devices, as well as experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and/or maintenance of water meters of three quarter (3/4) to ten (10) inch size.

Responsibilities
  • Processes work requests using applicable computer systems, enters work completed and updates status.
  • Installs, reads, removes, replaces, repairs, inspects, and tests potable and recycled water meters.
  • Troubleshoots problems with the meter reading systems, changes transponders.
  • Enters backflow certification data.
  • Monitors, reports, and discontinues water service to any premise where water meter and/or backflow prevention device has been tampered with, removed, or bypassed.
  • Reports and documents detection of water ordinance violations.
  • Responds to customer calls regarding water meter leaks, pressure problems, and other related concerns.
  • Replaces broken meter boxes.
  • Flow-tests water meters to determine accuracy to District standards.
  • Assists other departments as needed with emergency and non-emergency shutdowns.
  • Performs general maintenance, replacement, and repair of water meters and meter boxes to include sandblasting, sanding, and painting.
  • Operates a District vehicle as required in performance of assigned job.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities for improvement.
Requirements
  • A valid California Driver's License and a safe driving record.
  • A High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and maintenance of mechanical and/or electronic equipment or devices.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the installation, diagnosis, testing, repair, removal, and/or maintenance of water meters of three quarter (3/4) to ten (10) inch size.
  • A Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester certification issued by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) or American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA).

  • 12 days/year of vacation, increasing to a max of 23 days/year.
  • 8 days/year of sick leave, increasing to a max of 15 days/year.

  • A 9/80 work schedule may be available based on the needs of the department.
  • A 4/10 work schedule (four 10-hour days within a week) may be available for some Operations department staff.
  • PERS Retirement: The District contracts with the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
  • Employee Contributions: New Member (hired on or after 1/1/13 who are new CalPERS members or do not have reciprocity with CalPERS): 2% at age 62 formula based on the employee's 36 months of highest average annual compensation limit set by CalPERS.
  • Classic Member (hired before January 1, 2013, or who have reciprocity with CalPERS): 2.7% at age 55 formula based on the employee's single highest year annual compensation.
  • Deferred Compensation Retirement Plan (457 Plan): Optional plan designed to provide employees with additional retirement income.
  • Medical/Rx Insurance: Choice of Blue Shield PPO, EPO, HMO or Kaiser HMO plans, 100% premium paid by District for employee and 88% for dependent(s).

  • Short-Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance: The District provides short-term and long-term disability insurance equal to 66 2/3% of your income after a 30-day elimination period (90-day elimination period for long term disability) if totally disabled due to illness or injury.
  • Education Reimbursement Program: Employees are eligible to receive reimbursement for District approved courses not to exceed $3,000 per fiscal year.
