Job Summary

The Lactation Consultant plays a vital role in supporting breastfeeding women and families in achieving their goals. This position requires a systematic approach to problem-solving, working closely with clients to define and achieve their objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, intervene, evaluate, and document care in various situations, both simple and complex.
  • Prevent problems by enhancing the knowledge and strengths of breastfeeding women and their support systems.
  • Establish priorities based on individual needs, ensuring effective care for breastfeeding mothers, infants, children, and families.
  • Demonstrate competence in lactation consultant practice, providing high-quality care.
  • Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation of care.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide consistent care during hospitalization.
  • Visit postpartum breastfeeding clients for assessment and plan of care.
  • Provide consultation to breastfeeding mothers of infants admitted to pediatrics.
  • Design a plan of care for women with complex lactation issues.
  • Assist in managing and cleaning breast pump inventory.
  • Collaborate with nurses and neonatologists to manage lactation in the NICU.
  • Contribute to ongoing continuing education on lactation-related issues for nursing associates.
  • Act as a preceptor for new nurses.
  • Provide follow-up care for discharged clients who require further support.
  • Offer information on support services after discharge.
  • Provide outpatient consults as needed.
  • Serve as a resource/consultant for lactation in other clinical areas of the hospital.
  • Teach prenatal breastfeeding classes to the community.
  • Participate actively on the lactation committee.
Qualifications
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant required. May consider applicants who are enrolled in a course preparing to take the certification exam within one year or have taken the exam and are waiting for results.
  • Valid RN License from Virginia or reciprocal compact state required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
  • 1-2 years of experience in postpartum or couplet care in a hospital or comparable setting.
