We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Language and Culture Specialist. This role will provide support for the enhancement of Tribal Culture and the Salish language into all areas of the school, promoting positive values, self-esteem, respect, and success among students.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with school staff and certified Lead Salish Language Teacher to provide support for the enhancement of Tribal Culture and the Salish language.
- Encourage students to develop positive values, self-esteem, respect, and success.
- Appreciate and reflect students' experiences in the home and community in the curriculum and school calendar.
- Provide resources and support for teachers to integrate culture into the curriculum.
- Train staff on how to integrate culture into the curriculum.
- Make students aware of the accomplishments of Native Americans, including those with disabilities.
- Ensure that Tribal Culture is presented in a way that teaches respect for all people.
- Provide input for community members and students in the design of cultural instruction.
- Involve Tribal elders and other community members in classroom discussions of Tribal history.
- Conduct events and activities that support and reflect Tribal values.
- Serve as a resource to the Residential Program, after-school program, and summer school program to enhance student activities.
- Certification as a Teacher of Indian History or must be an uncertified Tribal Member or Native American with a good understanding of local culture and the Salish Language.
- Valid Washington State Driver's license and eligibility for the Tribes' vehicle insurance.
- First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of employment and maintenance throughout employment.
- Submission of all certifications, transcripts/proof of degree, and three written letters of recommendation upon applying.
- Knowledge of and ability to speak the Salish language.
- Ability to exhibit responsibility in maintaining the learning environment in the classroom on a daily basis.
- Ability to demonstrate sound mental and physical health.
- Ability to exhibit good moral character.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times and sign the PSIS Oath of Confidentiality form.
- Ability to incorporate Salish language into the curriculum by identifying and providing resources necessary for teachers to achieve instructional objectives.
- Ability to serve as a resource person to train staff in how to integrate culture into the curriculum.
- Ability to make school staff aware of and respectful of Tribal culture and values on all areas of planning and programming.
Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety-sensitive, it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.
If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and be eligible for the Tribes' Vehicle Insurance.
This position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
