ROLE: SUPPLY CHAIN RELIABILITY ENGINEER (STARSHIP & RAPTOR)

This role is integral to the Starship supply chain initiative, requiring a blend of strong leadership and technical expertise. It is a quality-focused position that demands a comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes and hands-on experience in quality investigations, quality assurance/control practices, and supplier management. The primary focus will be on leading investigations into supplier quality issues identified during production, establishing quality processes for suppliers, and ensuring compliance with these standards. The ideal candidate will possess a broad knowledge of manufacturing and quality processes, coupled with a strong willingness to tackle new challenges in unfamiliar domains to support our mission to Mars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with production, inspection, shipping/receiving, and engineering teams to create effective quality signals and processes that align with overall program reliability objectives.
  • Enhance quality processes, programs, and procedures to ensure the identification, segregation, control, and resolution of all nonconforming materials and components at both the business and supplier levels.
  • Work with stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to refine requirements, specifications, and supplier directives.
  • Oversee containment actions for non-conforming products, including product location identification, coordination with Build Reliability Engineers regarding potential flight risks, and managing root cause analysis efforts.
  • Employ data-driven problem-solving techniques to lead cross-functional supplier quality investigations.
  • Establish metrics, gather and analyze data to identify improvement opportunities aimed at reducing escapes, scrap, and rework, while enhancing yield and internal customer satisfaction.
  • Drive root cause analysis and influence operational practices to implement necessary corrective actions based on assessments.
  • Maintain and improve the Supply Chain MRB process, ensuring alignment with compliance standards.
  • Coordinate failure resolution and follow-up actions to prevent future issues.
  • Collaborate within a team to develop and manage strategies that enhance reliability, mitigate production risks, and capitalize on opportunities to improve quality and safety.
  • Conduct independent technical evaluations and verifications of supplier capabilities and ongoing reliability.
  • Engage with various organizations to pinpoint improvement opportunities and lead, manage, and execute enhancement projects.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in quality systems, quality assurance, control, or manufacturing/production.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in engineering or supply chain management.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9000, or Nadcap AC7004 standards.
  • Experience in Quality Systems Administration, including quality system auditing and supplier audits.
  • Strong understanding of chemistry, engineering principles, fluid dynamics, and material mechanics.
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing and material properties.
  • Proficiency in using Excel, SQL, or Python/R for analysis or modeling dynamic systems.
  • Experience with machining and related operations such as milling, turning, and tube cutting.
  • Ability to quickly learn about a diverse range of supplier capabilities.
  • Practical experience in developing requirements and specifications.
  • Skilled in identifying and solving complex problems in a structured manner to aid decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or collaborating on multidisciplinary engineering challenges.
  • Familiarity with quality tools such as Lean principles, Six Sigma, root cause analysis, advanced product quality planning (APQP), and process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA).
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Understanding of supplier quality processes, including production part approval processes and first article inspection reports.
  • Disciplined approach to problem-solving methodologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to suppliers, team members, and management.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Availability to work extended hours, including nights and weekends as necessary to meet key milestones.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the work week, which may include international travel.
  • This position requires on-site presence; remote work is not an option.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay Range:
Senior Supply Chain Reliability Engineer: $125,000 - $175,000 per year.

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the opportunity to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included. Employees accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and are eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually. Exempt employees receive 5 days of sick leave per year.
