About the Role

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Financial Aid Counselor to join our team. As a key member of our Division for Enrollment Management, you will play a critical role in optimizing student recruitment and retention by developing and implementing strategic enrollment plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide exceptional customer service to students and their families, ensuring a seamless financial aid experience.
  • Manage a caseload of students, advising them on financial aid eligibility, application procedures, and available financial aid programs.
  • Review applications for accuracy and verification, determining financial need and awarding student financial aid packages.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Mason Student Services Center, utilizing Salesforce and Microsoft Teams to respond to emails and phone calls.
  • Review reports to ensure files are awarded and packaged in accordance with federal, state, and institutional rules.
  • Process professional judgment appeals, corrections on Institutional Student Information Records, and ensure students are repackaged accurately after appeals are reviewed.
  • Assist in community outreach activities and provide guidance on financial aid-related matters.
Requirements
  • Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with experience equating to a master's degree.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of federal student aid rules and regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and computer software skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage several responsibilities simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Banner financial aid software.
