Position Overview

The Systems Engineering Division (SED) brings extensive expertise in systems engineering to the U.S. government and various public and private entities, universities, nonprofit organizations, consortia, and commercial enterprises engaged in the advanced application of space technology. From systems architecture development to system analysis and optimization, astrodynamics, orbital debris management, navigation, failure analysis, mission assurance, cost and schedule evaluation, and economic market analysis, SED leverages a vast array of engineering and business disciplines against a diverse and dynamic portfolio of programs and national challenges.

The Space Architecture Department (SAD) provides technical guidance and leadership in architectural methodologies, processes, and tools to a wide range of clients, including National Security Space (NSS) and other defense programs, NASA, NOAA, NNSA, and more. The Senior System Architect (Senior Engineer Specialist - Systems Engineering) plays a crucial role in conducting and leading architecture trade studies, conceptualization studies, modeling tasks, and program assessment analyses across varying levels of complexity, from prototype systems to fully acquired systems and complex systems of systems to missions and enterprises. SAD applies and refines disciplined system architecting principles and leads cross-functional teams to offer impactful guidance that aids our clients in making critical acquisition, operational, and enterprise management decisions.

Senior Engineering Specialists typically act as senior technical authorities, consultants, primary investigators, or team leaders on multiple projects. They facilitate or organize interactions between clients and Aerospace technical and management personnel, coordinate extensive technical efforts across program/project lines, and mentor junior staff while serving as role models.

Work Model: This position requires on-site presence for client meetings and classified work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop system of systems and enterprise engineering Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) models, incorporating threat models and Blue capabilities in response to identified threats.
  • Develop and integrate analytical methods and tools to assess program and mission strategic concepts, influencing conceptual designs for performance, risk, and resilience against disruptive events or threats.
  • Lead the development of architecture for modeling, simulation, and data tools, defining concepts of operations and use cases, and overseeing implementation to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Conduct models and analyses to identify risks associated with new capabilities, including strategic assessments, operations, resources, networks, and data across the national security space enterprise. Provide recommendations to inform client decisions on priorities, funding, requirements, and resource allocation.
  • Lead project teams consisting of Aerospace, client, and contractor personnel on multiple concurrent projects to elicit and identify needs, requirements, and constraints for studies, marshaling technical expertise across various disciplines to enable concurrent engineering approaches while mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications for Success

Minimum requirements for the Senior System Architect - Senior Engineer Specialist - Systems Engineering position include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a technical field or a Bachelor's degree combined with equivalent technical experience.
  • A minimum of 12 years of substantial experience in the space, intelligence, and/or defense sectors.
  • Proficiency in engineering and analytical capabilities such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) or modeling and simulation.
  • Experience in project planning and team leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, Aerospace program offices, and contractors; to work alongside other functional organizations within Aerospace; and to mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Experience in developing and presenting strategic decision-making and communication artifacts for senior management and technical architecture design artifacts for engineering-level reviews.
  • Exceptional time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and to organize and lead cross-functional, cross-organizational teams for studies and assessments.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally approximately 5-10% of the time.
  • This position requires a current and active TS/SCI security clearance issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is necessary to obtain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

It would be advantageous if you possess one or more of the following:

  • An advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated success in organizing and leading cross-functional, cross-organizational teams to execute studies and assessments, producing high-quality outcomes.
  • More than 5 years of relevant work or graduate school experience in system or enterprise architecting, systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, or digital engineering.
  • More than 5 years of relevant work or graduate school experience in space systems, with experience in command and control, system of systems engineering, system testing, and training being desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with system or enterprise modeling in Systems Modeling Language (SysML), Unified Architecture Framework (UAF), or Unified Profile for DoDAF and MODAF (UPDM).
  • Experience collaborating closely with key Aerospace customer agencies in the defense and intelligence community, possessing strong knowledge of their domain and professional networks.
  • Experience leading and executing digital transformation initiatives.
