Team Overview and Role

The Software Platform division, which encompasses Container Orchestration, is dedicated to enhancing developer efficiency and bolstering system dependability by creating essential software platforms and tools that empower the broader engineering efforts at Robinhood.

The Container Orchestration team is tasked with developing a robust, horizontally scalable, secure, and industry-leading (for Robinhood's scale) suite of Kubernetes-driven container provisioning APIs that integrate seamlessly with other infrastructure and platform solutions. This team is primarily focused on proactively ensuring the scalability, reliability, and availability of our Kubernetes distribution, which includes managing the deployment topology and configuration of the open-source components we utilize, along with the extensions we create.

Container Orchestration is responsible for defining and executing a cell-based, multi-region architecture for Robinhood's platform and infrastructure services. This architecture allows platform services to scale without introducing additional complexity for application developers. The APIs and systems overseen by this team also facilitate transparent platform integrations (such as sidecars and daemonsets) that provide core functionalities (Authentication, Security, DNS, Load Balancing, Storage) to the tenants (applications), making this area crucial for the overall safety and reliability of Robinhood and its commitment to being a safety-first organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and architect large-scale systems within the team, balancing risk and long-term maintainability.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for optimization and enhancements to the infrastructure and systems.
  • Establish and guide the technical direction of projects while mentoring and elevating junior engineers on the team.
  • Contribute to open-source initiatives.
Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of Kubernetes control plane and data plane components.
  • Strong grasp of the Kubernetes Platform and container lifecycle management.
  • Experience addressing Kubernetes multi-cluster challenges and networking (e.g., CNI deployment and troubleshooting).
  • Proven experience managing and troubleshooting large-scale infrastructure services in production environments.
  • A commitment to mentoring junior engineers and enhancing engineering practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Contributions to open-source projects related to Kubernetes.
  • Prior experience scaling the Kubernetes platform in high-growth startup environments.
  • Experience in designing and managing other distributed systems at scale.
