Key Responsibilities
• Oversee the daily activities of phlebotomists, ensuring compliance with hospital laboratory policies and procedures.
• Promote quality patient care and act as an ambassador for the laboratory.
• Ensure safety precautions and protective attire are used at all times.
• Familiarize yourself with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures.
• Create and periodically review the Section procedure manual, ensuring compliance with State/CLIA standards and OIG guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with infection control techniques within the laboratory.
• Ensure compliance with safety techniques within the laboratory.
• Properly use the Pneumatic Tube System.
• Collect samples from inpatients using standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques according to established policies and procedures.
• Promote quality and participate in quality improvement programs.
• Inventory, report, and restock phlebotomy supplies to ensure continuity of activities.
• Assist in proper workload documentation.
• Assist in training and orientation of new staff.
• Periodically review job description, procedure manual, and techniques to ensure conformity to established policies and procedures.
• Responsible for data entry and proficiency using the LIS computer systems.
• Make monthly schedules for the Phlebotomy team to ensure proper coverage for the hospital.
• Oversee phlebotomists throughout the shift to ensure all samples are collected correctly and in a timely manner.
• Enter schedule into the computer and make all changes accordingly.
• Assist in interviewing and selecting new phlebotomists.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• 3 years of clinical laboratory experience, including phlebotomy certification.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
• Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Proficient with computer.
