Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist Extern plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures. Working under the supervision of registered nurses and medical staff, this individual assists in preparing the operating room environment, selecting and securing necessary instruments and equipment, and maintaining a sterile field. A strong understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies is essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Prepare the operating room with the assistance of other personnel, adhering to disinfection procedures and selecting appropriate instruments and equipment for each surgical procedure.
  2. Exercise proper sterile technique, opening and arranging the sterile field in accordance with accepted protocols for each surgical procedure.
  3. Utilize appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments under the guidance of the surgical team.
  4. Report pertinent patient information, including changes in condition or observations relevant to patient care, to the Registered Nurse.
  5. Assist the surgical team in maintaining the cleanliness of the work environment, including disposal of contaminated linens and waste, cleaning instruments as needed, and disinfecting equipment.
  6. Assist with the replacement of medical supplies, using proper procedure for securing supplies from other areas.
  7. Check, restock, and inventory supplies, and assist with ordering as assigned.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Technology Program
  • A letter of recommendation from a surgical tech instructor is preferred
  • BLS required
