Key Responsibilities- Patrol and Secure Campus Grounds: Conduct regular patrols of campus grounds and facilities to prevent and respond to security incidents.
- Investigate and Report Incidents: Investigate and submit reports on criminal offenses committed on campus, and prepare written reports as required.
- Monitor and Report Hazards: Continuously monitor and report on potential security and safety hazards on campus, and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to mitigate these risks.
- Enforce College and Local Laws: Enforce college and local laws, rules, and regulations, and provide assistance to law enforcement and other public agencies as required.
- Provide Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to the campus community, including responding to complaints and resolving issues in a professional and courteous manner.
- Perform Access Control Duties: Perform access control duties, including securing and unlocking academic buildings, and responding to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms.
- Provide Safety Escorts: Provide safety escorts to members of the campus community, and fill front desk assignments as required.
- Perform Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by management, including receiving and filling out property receipts for lost and found items.
- Knowledge of Security Principles: Possess knowledge of basic security principles and practices, including public safety codes, policies, and regulations.
- Communication Skills: Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
- Education and Training: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and at least one year of directly related experience, which may include certification or practicum training.
- Physical Demands: Be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, walk, run, climb, bend, stoop, and lift weights proportionate with need to perform medical assistance.
The Public Safety Officer will work in a variety of situations, including during holidays, weekends, day/evening/night shifts, forced overtime, and in a state of emergency. The position requires the ability to work in an indoor and outdoor environment, and may be exposed to uncomfortable work spaces, such as darkness or poor lighting, dirt/dust, fumes/odors, isolation, mechanical or traffic hazards.
The Public Safety Officer must remain calm and be able to deescalate volatile situations, and be able to work safely in compliance with the College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
