Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Public Safety Call Taker to join our team at the City of Midland, TX. As a Public Safety Call Taker, you will be responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency calls from citizens, routing calls to the appropriate agency or organization, and providing critical information to law enforcement officials and investigators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Answer emergency and non-emergency calls from citizens and provide critical information to law enforcement officials and investigators.
  • Route calls to the appropriate agency or organization, such as police, fire, sheriff, and emergency medical service.
  • Obtain and disseminate information via the telephone, computer, and other communication systems.
  • Enter related information into the system and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple calls and tasks simultaneously, and maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred with one to three years of experience in a clerical position, preferably with experience in data entry and general personal computing and telephone skills.
  • Ability to work with communications equipment and communicate with citizens and emergency personnel in highly stressful, possibly emergency situations.
  • Ability to read and understand technical and professional manuals to record work activities, keep records, or work with computers.
  • Must be able to pass a typing test with 35 wpm and a Perfex test.
Working Conditions

The employee sits at a terminal and listens to a communications headset to answer the telephone. Must be able to communicate clearly under what, at times, could be highly complex and stressful situations. Ability to learn and discern visual images on small liquid crystal displays and discern between multi-colored lights.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

Ability to sit, stand, and move inside a building. The employee sits at a terminal and listens to a communications headset in order to answer the telephone. Must be able to communicate clearly under what, at times, could be highly complex and stressful situations.
