About the Opportunity
The Facilities Management unit of the Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is seeking a skilled Trades Specialist I to join our team in Roads and Grounds. As a key member of our team, you will perform a variety of skilled landscape construction duties, including the repair and construction of steps, sidewalks, roads, parking lots, and other infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Operate a range of equipment, including payloaders, backhoes, road graders, dozers, asphalt pavers, rollers, forklifts, crane trucks, large dump trucks, sanitation vehicles, landscape equipment, and skid loaders.
- Install, construct, and maintain landscape structures using materials such as concrete, bituminous concrete, flagstone, field stone, sculptured stone, brick, blocks, pavers, retaining wall blocks, and landscape timbers.
- Apply sealers, anti-spalling compounds, adhesives, and other materials to perform normal duties, including the finishing of concrete according to standard practices and procedures.
- Perform landscaping tasks, including the planting of trees and ornamental shrubs, seeding and slicing lawns, aerating, fertilizing, and applying soil amendments using tractors and power equipment.
- Remove snow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots using trucks, tractors, power brooms, and hand tools.
- Respond to emergency situations and be available for telephone contact during all emergency and unsafe environmental conditions.
- Perform repairs on all equipment as needed, complete service and maintenance on equipment and trucks, and assist the mechanics with major repairs.
- Maintain cleanliness of assigned areas by mechanical or hand methods.
- Fabricate parts and perform repairs on grounds equipment using torches, welders, lathes, drill presses, and other shop equipment as required.
- Assist in the upkeep of maintenance records for trucks and grounds equipment.
- Provide for the proper preventive maintenance of all equipment, including oil, fuel, belts, tires, batteries, brake adjustments, reel adjustments, greasing, and other daily and/or weekly inspections.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED equivalency.
- Two years of experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
- Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting, bending, walking, standing, carrying, and climbing stairs daily.
- Ability to operate equipment on rough, steep terrain for long periods of time.
Work Hours and Pay Grade
6:30 - 3:30, Pay Grade 13. West Virginia University provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.
