About the Job

The Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is seeking a skilled Trades Specialist I to join its Roads and Grounds team. In this role, you will perform a variety of skilled landscape construction duties, including repair and construction of steps, sidewalks, roads, parking lots, and other infrastructure.

As a Trades Specialist I, you will operate all Roads & Grounds equipment, work with other crafts as needed, and fill in for the Landscape Construction Worker lead as needed. You will also be responsible for providing excellent customer service and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Operate equipment such as payloaders, backhoes, road graders, dozers, asphalt pavers, rollers, forklifts, crane trucks, large dump trucks, sanitation vehicles, landscape equipment, and skid loaders.
  2. Install, construct, and maintain landscape structures using materials such as concrete, bituminous concrete, flagstone, field stone, sculptured stone, brick, blocks, pavers, retaining wall blocks, and landscape timbers.
  3. Apply sealers, anti-spalling compounds, adhesives, etc. in performing normal duties, including the finishing of concrete according to standard practices and procedures.
  4. Perform landscaping tasks, including the planting of trees and ornamental shrubs, seeding and slicing lawns, aerating, fertilizing, and applying soil amendments using tractors and power equipment.
  5. Remove snow from sidewalks, steps, roads, and parking lots by means of trucks, tractors, power brooms, and hand tools.
  6. Must be able to respond to emergency situations on all occasions and must be available for telephone contact during all emergency and unsafe environmental conditions.
  7. Perform repairs on all equipment as needed, complete service and maintenance on equipment and trucks, and assist the mechanics with major repairs.
  8. Maintain cleanliness of assigned areas by mechanical or hand methods.
  9. Fabricate parts and perform repairs on grounds equipment using torches, welders, lathes, drill presses, and other shop equipment as required.
  10. Assist in the upkeep of maintenance records for trucks and grounds equipment.
  11. Provide for the proper preventive maintenance of all equipment, including oil, fuel, belts, tires, batteries, brake adjustments, reel adjustments, greasing, etc. required on a daily basis for all Roads & Grounds equipment.
  12. Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment involving daily and/or weekly inspections.
  13. Perform duties as needed to complete seasonal change over on all trucks and equipment.

Requirements

  1. Must have High School diploma or GED equivalency.
  2. Must have one of the following: 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC or other craft trades, completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade, or completion of a 2 year accredited vocational craft trades program.
  3. Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  4. Work requires simple hand/eye operations and some accuracy and regularity of motions, such as set-up and operation of basic instruments and equipment, and/or the occasional use of standard hand or power tools with minimal speed requirements.
  5. Ability to perform heavy lifting, bending, walking, standing, carrying, and climbing stairs daily.
  6. Perform digging as needed.
  7. Able to operate equipment on rough, steep terrain for long periods of time as needed.

Work Hours and Pay Grade

6:30 - 3:30

Pay Grade: 13
