Position Summary:

The Screw Machine Operator/Set Up is responsible for configuring, loading raw materials, and operating various models of screw machines, including Brown & Sharpe, D2 Escomatics, SR32 type N Star machines, and CNC Lathes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret blueprints, engineering specifications, and shop orders to determine machine setup, production methods, and operational sequences.
  • Install and adjust machine components such as cams, gears, and stops, ensuring the correct positioning of cutting tools. Adjust speed, feed rates, and tool positions to achieve precise replication of blueprints. Willingness to learn tool grinding techniques is essential.
  • Position and secure stops and guides, adjust clutches, and maintain tool sharpness. Regulate machining factors, including adjustment rolls, blade angles, and machine speeds.
  • Initiate machine operations and monitor performance to reposition workpieces, thread dies, or modify settings for multiple passes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate multiple machines concurrently.
  • Conduct inspections and measurements using gauges, including plug gauges and thread ring gauges. Proficiency in reading micrometers, calipers, and both digital and dial indicators is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, correspondence, and memos. Capable of writing basic correspondence and effectively presenting information in small group settings.
  • Mathematical proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Competence in addressing problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. A minimum of six months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, use hands for handling objects or controls, reach with arms, talk, and hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts or machinery.
  • Noise levels in the work environment are typically moderate.
