Role Summary:

Under the guidance of the Medical Director, the Physician delivers medical care and education to patients and their families across various environments, including inpatient, outpatient, home, and facility settings, focusing on both non-hospice palliative care and hospice services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical guidance to all Hospice staff across different programs, acting as the primary physician for patients without a designated primary care provider.
  • Engage in the admission and re-certification processes and contribute to weekly interdisciplinary team discussions.
  • Conduct patient visits based on clinical needs, including acuity, admission date, and symptom management, while adhering to regulatory standards.
  • Consult with attending physicians regarding symptom management and clinical care plans, and serve as a resource for community physicians regarding potential hospice patients.
  • Support the Palliative Care program by collaborating on established protocols, practice standards, and outcome evaluations, seeing patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Review patients' medical histories, treatments, and clinical progress to ensure compliance with cost-effectiveness and Medicare regulations.
  • Foster positive relationships with healthcare professionals in the community, serving as a knowledgeable resource on end-of-life care and promoting hospice benefits.
  • Work with the Medical Director to create a call schedule that ensures 24/7 physician service coverage.
  • Ensure adherence to state, federal, and accreditation regulations related to patient care.

The above duties are intended to provide a representative overview of the primary responsibilities associated with this position. Employees may be asked to perform additional job-related tasks as necessary.

Qualifications for the Physician:

  • Current medical license (M.D. or D.O.) to practice in Michigan.
  • Board eligibility or certification in internal medicine, family medicine, oncology, emergency medicine, or hospice and palliative medicine; active board certification is preferred.
  • Board certification in palliative medicine is required within two years of hire; fellowship training is advantageous.
  • A minimum of three years of medical practice experience.
