Role Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a vital member of the healthcare team, reporting to the Director of Nursing (DON) and the Regional Practice Director. The CMA is responsible for delivering patient care under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and healthcare providers. This includes patient communication, vital sign assessment, electronic medical record documentation, and immunization administration. The CMA also plays a key role in inventory management and fostering a collaborative team atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide patients from the waiting area to examination rooms, utilizing the electronic medical record (EMR) system for room assignments.
  • Document patient histories and primary concerns in the EMR.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, adhering to safety and infection control protocols.
  • Conduct patient intake, gathering comprehensive medical histories, including surgical history, chief complaints, and allergy information.
  • Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and weight, following established protocols.
  • Assist diabetic patients with foot inspections and weight measurements.
  • Inquire about dental needs for obstetric patients and facilitate appointment scheduling.
  • Wear a wristwatch with a second hand to ensure accurate vital sign measurements.
  • Evaluate and document patients' pain levels and vital signs in their charts.
  • Perform various tests, including urinalysis and pregnancy tests, documenting findings in the EMR and collaborating with providers for follow-up as necessary.
  • Administer vaccines in accordance with policy, ensuring proper documentation and patient education.
  • Maintain a daily temperature log for vaccine storage, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Conduct monthly cleaning of vaccine storage units and maintain accurate logs.
  • Document patient vaccination data in the NJIIS Registry and provide educational materials on vaccine side effects.
  • Communicate with patients as needed.
  • Facilitate patient flow and assist in preparing examination rooms and patient charts.
  • Support healthcare providers during examinations and procedures as required.
  • Adhere to infection control policies during patient care.
  • Clean and disinfect examination areas after each patient visit.
  • Contact patients who miss appointments to assist with rescheduling.
  • Maintain logs for medical devices as required.
  • Process referrals and manage patient documentation efficiently.
  • Ensure patient privacy and comfort while delivering care.
  • Verify patient identities using two identifiers before providing care.
  • Keep patient care equipment clean and properly stored.
  • Manage inventory of medical supplies, placing orders as necessary.
  • Check supplies for expiration dates regularly.
  • Disinfect treatment rooms at the end of each shift.
  • Prepare patient charts for the following day, including necessary documentation for providers.
  • Perform blood draws as needed, explaining procedures to patients beforehand.
  • Seek assistance for challenging procedures or abnormal findings.
  • Assist in managing inventory and sterilization of medical equipment.
  • Ensure proper cleaning and sterilization of instruments according to established protocols.
  • Coordinate the delivery and receipt of sterilized instruments.
  • Maintain and stock all examination room equipment and supplies.
  • Keep accurate inventory records and review incoming orders for completeness.
  • Participate in staff training and development programs.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.
  • Engage in continuing education and collaborative meetings.
  • Provide orientation and training for new staff as needed.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and a respectful attitude.
  • Accept feedback constructively and implement changes as necessary.
  • Introduce oneself to patients and their families throughout their visit.
  • Report unusual occurrences and necessary information according to established protocols.
  • Complete incident reports promptly when required.
  • Report any actions that negatively impact patient care.
  • Deliver optimal care to ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Complete mandatory training and attend required meetings.
  • Report to various OHI locations as scheduled.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Current National Certification as a Medical Assistant is mandatory.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 is necessary.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet organizational needs.
  • Willingness to rotate between sites and work weekends as needed.
  • Reliable transportation is necessary for travel between locations.
