Job Summary

The Recreation Specialist will work collaboratively with a team to design and implement recreational activities for children residing in our homeless shelter. This role reports to the Social Work Supervisor to ensure that all activities are suitable and meet the needs of the clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the team to provide academic, recreational, and social skills programming to school-age children and young adults in the shelter.
  • Create a group environment that promotes positive behavioral norms and provides a safe space for youth living in the homeless shelter setting.
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate activities and programs.
  • Document monthly participation and outcomes, analyze results, and prepare recommendations.
  • Participate in initial training, ongoing staff development, and supervision.
  • Maintain proper safety standards regarding the health of participants in all programs.
  • Ensure the recreational space is clean and well-maintained.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements

High School Diploma/GED required; College degree preferred. Previous experience working with children and/or young adults is essential. Experience working with low-income populations is preferred. Must enjoy the challenges of working with youth who may present academic and social deficits. An upbeat and engaging personality is desirable. Program hours include afternoons, evenings, some weekends, and holidays. Must be computer-savvy. A clean/valid NYS Driver's License is required. Must be able to pass a child abuse screening and criminal background check.
