This position is integral to the Blue Origin Engines division, focusing on the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of propulsion systems and engines.
Our innovative family of engines is set to power the next generation of rockets for various applications, including commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
As a vital member of our diverse engineering team, you will leverage data to pinpoint factors influencing engine reliability and system safety, ensuring the safety and dependability of our engines throughout their operational lifecycles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate engine hazards and their origins to establish system safety constraints and control measures.
- Lead the creation and validation of system requirements to ensure safety aspects are thoroughly addressed.
- Assist in preliminary trade studies to incorporate design-for-safety and reliability into engine architecture.
- Assess mission-specific risks based on the status of hazard controls.
- Conduct reliability analyses to identify design vulnerabilities and recommend enhancements, utilizing techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and physics-of-failure assessments.
- Review and authorize engineering modifications from a safety and reliability standpoint.
- Investigate incidents to determine root causes and formulate corrective actions to avert future occurrences.
- Develop and maintain essential safety documentation, including safety cases, assessment reports, and hazard logs.
- Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, computer science, physics, or a related technical field.
- A proven history of building trust and effective working relationships that enhance team performance and foster an inclusive culture.
- Over 5 years of experience in system development, integration, or testing of aerospace products or complex electromechanical systems.
- At least 2 years of experience in system development/integration or RAMS experience with liquid rocket engines, or 4+ years in system safety, reliability, or RAMS engineering across any industry.
- Proficient in system safety analysis methodologies and tools (FTA, FMEA, FHA, etc.).
- Experience in developing hazard reports and tracking systems.
- Experience in a safety-critical environment.
- Knowledge of systems engineering practices throughout the product lifecycle.
- Understanding of configuration management principles and practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
- Demonstrated technical expertise with liquid rocket engines, test facilities, or space launch vehicles.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering principles and practices.
- Experience with Weibull analysis, reliability growth modeling, and probabilistic risk analysis.
- Proficient in reliability analysis software such as Minitab, Matlab, or similar.
- Experience with reliability/life test design and failure reporting systems.
- Experience integrating complex subsystems into spacecraft or launch vehicles.
- Experience in improving system safety policies and procedures for development engineering environments.
- Experience with scripting languages like VBA and Python for process automation.
- Familiarity with systems engineering tools such as DOORS or similar.
- Basic project management skills.
