Job Title: Horticulture Assistant

About the Job:

We are seeking a part-time Horticulture Assistant to join our team at Joliet Junior College. As a Student Employee, you will have the opportunity to work in our greenhouse and outdoor land lab, assisting with various tasks related to plant care and maintenance.

Salary and Benefits:

The estimated salary for this position is $14.00 per hour, which aligns with the standard pay rate for student employees at JJC. This role is considered non-exempt and falls under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Job Responsibilities:

Some of the key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Irrigating greenhouses and gardens, including weekends;
  • Transplanting and propagating plants and crops;
  • Assisting with plant sales and customer relations;
  • Maintaining the greenhouse and outdoor areas, including weeding, cleaning, and mulching;
  • Record-keeping and data entry for crop management and chemical applications;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications and Requirements:

To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.0 or above;
  • Be enrolled at JJC in at least 6 credit hours;
  • Be pursuing a degree in Horticulture or a related field;
  • Demonstrate good communication, organization, and time management skills;
  • Be able to work flexibly, including weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with experience in greenhouse and garden-related work, a valid driver's license, and proficiency in English and Spanish verbal and written communication are preferred.

Work Environment:

This role involves working in greenhouses with varying temperatures and humidity levels, as well as outdoor areas with potential exposure to insects and irritants.
