Surgical Unit Assistant

Overview
The Surgical Unit Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the nursing staff and ensuring the seamless preparation of surgical patients across all age groups. This position is integral to the sterile team, collaborating closely with the Circulating Nurse to maintain a sterile environment and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Foster and maintain professional relationships with patients, visitors, medical staff, and hospital personnel, ensuring the confidentiality of patient information is upheld.
- Assist in gathering necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures based on established preference cards.
- Prepare sterile tables, instruments, and supplies tailored for specific surgical interventions.
- Aid in the safe transportation and positioning of patients onto the operating room table, and assist in transferring patients post-surgery to recovery areas.
- Contribute to the preparation, positioning, and draping of patients and the surgical site.
- Efficiently prepare and pass instruments, sutures, sponges, and other essential supplies during surgical procedures.
- Manage specimens with care, ensuring proper handling and timely transfer to the circulator.
- Function as a second scrub as assigned, maintaining the sterile field and performing counts in accordance with established policies.
- Assist with post-operative tasks such as cast applications and dressing changes.
- After procedures, ensure the removal of sharps, cleaning of instruments, and proper disposal of used materials.
- During off-hours, support supply management by cleaning instruments and restocking supplies.
- Engage in performance improvement initiatives and contribute to team meetings and training sessions.
Working Environment
This role requires manual dexterity for the use of various instruments and equipment, along with good vision and hearing capabilities. The position may involve lifting heavy items, occasionally up to 50 lbs, and pushing heavy equipment.
Training Opportunities
North Country Hospital is committed to developing talent and is open to training candidates who may not have prior experience. Opportunities for training at affiliated teaching facilities may be available.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an Operating Room Technician program or equivalent training.
- Healthcare certification or degree, or a valid LPN license is required.
- Current BLS certification.
