Overview
The Surgical Unit Clerk plays a vital role in supporting the nursing staff and ensuring the smooth operation of surgical procedures for patients across all age groups. This position involves working closely with the sterile team to maintain a sterile environment and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and uphold professional relationships with patients, visitors, medical staff, and other hospital personnel while ensuring the confidentiality of patient information.
- Gather necessary instruments and supplies for surgical cases as per established preference cards.
- Prepare sterile tables and arrange instruments and supplies required for various surgical procedures.
- Assist in the safe transportation of patients to and from the operating room, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Aid in the positioning and draping of patients and the surgical area to facilitate optimal conditions for surgery.
- Prepare and provide instruments, sutures, sponges, and other materials essential for surgical operations.
- Manage specimens carefully, ensuring proper handling and timely transfer to the circulating nurse.
- Support the surgical team as a second scrub when assigned.
- Maintain the sterile field, anticipate the needs of the surgeon, and perform counts in accordance with established policies.
- Assist with post-operative tasks, including cast applications and dressing changes.
- Ensure proper disposal of sharps and other materials after procedures, adhering to safety protocols.
- In off-hour cases, assist with instrument cleaning and stocking duties.
- Engage in performance improvement initiatives.
- Complete other assigned tasks as necessary.
- Participate in meetings and training sessions.
Working Environment
This role requires manual dexterity in handling instruments and equipment, with good vision and hearing capabilities. The position involves physical demands, including the ability to lift heavy items and push equipment as needed.
Training Opportunities
North Country Hospital is committed to developing talent and is open to training candidates with no prior experience for this role. Opportunities for training at affiliated facilities may be available.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an Operating Room Technician program or equivalent experience
- Healthcare certification or degree, or a valid LPN license is required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
