Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the HIV Clinical Services Nursing Manager, the HIV Registered Nurse collaborates with a diverse team to deliver patient-focused healthcare in specialized areas such as Gender Affirming Medicine and Sexual Health (GeMS), HIV, and Infectious Disease. This role involves providing direct patient care in accordance with the RN scope of practice. The HIV RN employs co-visits to ensure prompt access to care; conducts both in-person and telephone triage; schedules new patients and completes the RN intake process for all individuals entering HIV care; and supports departmental initiatives aimed at enhancing patient healthcare outcomes. Additional responsibilities include fostering collaborative relationships with internal and external departments, including public health entities and multi-ethnic organizations within the HIV and Transgender communities. This position encompasses both clinical and administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates daily clinic operations by delivering direct patient care and maintaining clear, concise, and timely documentation.
  • Identifies symptoms and prioritizes nursing interventions aligned with the patient's condition; utilizes strong decision-making and critical thinking skills during triage to determine the necessity for escalated clinical care.
  • Prepares and administers medications in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, organizational policies, and physician directives.
  • Ensures accessibility to healthcare services for HIV, PrEP/PEP, GeMS, and Infectious Disease appointments; collaborates with various clinical team members, coordinated services teams, and HIV prevention teams.
  • Handles clinical tasks including assisting patients with appointment scheduling, providing medication refills per approved protocols, communicating lab results as directed by providers, triaging/assessing symptoms, and following up on specialty care referrals.
  • Recognizes patient educational needs and delivers teaching/education tailored to individual literacy levels and best practices.
  • Adheres to mandated reporting requirements by submitting Confidential Morbidity Reports to public health authorities and engages in direct communication with public health nurses regarding Tuberculosis cases and STI reporting.
  • Ensures that care provided to individuals living with HIV complies with standards established by the Ryan White Care Act and all relevant regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Builds and nurtures trusting relationships with patients to encourage their ongoing engagement in care; applies a Trauma-Informed Approach during interactions with patients and team members.
  • Offers support and professional guidance to Medical Assistants, escalating concerns to the RN Manager as necessary.
  • Manages medication inventory for the department clinic by ordering supplies as needed to maintain appropriate levels and verifying expiration dates monthly.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities to stay informed about the latest treatment options, resources, and guidelines in LGBTQ+ and Transgender care, HIV treatment and prevention, and Infectious Diseases.
  • Addresses quality care metrics and actively engages in departmental continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides support to achieve and sustain viral suppression for individuals living with HIV throughout the care continuum.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Maintains a flexible schedule to accommodate coverage at various clinics, including evening and occasional weekend shifts, as well as emergency coverage to meet client needs.
  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures, core values, competencies, and applicable laws.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and applies safety principles as per organizational policies and the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Utilizes effective communication methods and skills.
  • Exhibits responsibility and accountability for professional practice.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Required Experience:
  • 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • 1 year of work or lived experience in communities such as LGBTQ+, Transgender, individuals living with HIV, those experiencing substance use disorders, or individuals with mental health conditions.
Preferred Experience:
  • Previous experience in an outpatient community healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of STI, HIV, and Infectious Disease transmission and prevention.
  • Experience addressing health inequities and social determinants of health affecting individuals living with HIV and the LGBTQ+ communities.
Required Education:
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing.
Preferred Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Required Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association).
  • Current California Registered Nurse License.
Required Skills:
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate medical information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity to provide empathetic care.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Equipment Used:
  • Computer, phone, copy machine, fax machine.
Working Conditions:
  • Continuous standing, walking, and twisting.
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Universal Requirements:
