STATEMENT OF DUTIES

General Overview:
This role involves providing advanced legal services through comprehensive legal research for judges within a judicial district.

Key Distinctions:
This position is uniquely focused on legal research for all district judges and the management of the district's law library, distinguishing it from law clerk roles. Responsibilities do not include courtroom or bailiff duties. The position reports directly to the Chief Judge of the designated district. Each district is permitted to convert Law Clerk roles to Legal Research Attorney positions based on a specified ratio.

Application Requirements:
Interested candidates must submit an unedited writing sample (maximum of 5 pages), a cover letter, and a resume. The position is associated with the Douglas County Justice Center.

The Legal Research Attorney Team for the 18th Judicial District provides support to District Court Judges across multiple counties, assisting with legal research and drafting. Candidates should be adept at independently managing complex legal writing tasks. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited law school, possession of a valid Bar admission certificate for the State of Colorado, and eligibility to practice law in Colorado.

Salary: Compensation for this position will be determined based on relevant experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Conducts thorough legal research on issues arising during litigation.
  2. Advises judges on research findings and aids in formulating appropriate actions in cases.
  3. Drafts initial opinions issued by the court.
  4. Reviews court documents and pleadings as assigned by judges.
  5. Compiles and organizes research information pertinent to specific cases.
  6. Maintains library resources, including books, electronic subscriptions, and other materials.
  7. Recommends library resources for research and reference.
  8. Manages access to research materials for individuals other than district judges.
  9. Participates in required meetings and training sessions.
  10. Performs additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities but is accountable for individual work output within a collaborative team environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from an accredited law school; possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado; and eligibility to practice law before Colorado courts.

Physical Requirements:
The role requires regular sitting, reaching, and communication. Occasional walking and lifting of up to 10 pounds may be necessary. Specific vision capabilities include close and distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The position may involve handling urgent situations and is subject to frequent interruptions. The typical noise level is quiet.
