Position Overview

In alignment with the mission and values of the Martha O'Bryan Center, the Guidance Counselor plays a pivotal role in delivering a holistic counseling program that is both anticipatory and reactive. Collaborating closely with the Director of Culture and Behavior Interventionists, the Guidance Counselor offers individualized, small group, and large group counseling services to students facing emotional distress and academic hurdles.

The Martha O'Bryan Center is dedicated to empowering a diverse community of learners, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to become responsible leaders who can effect positive change. Our approach emphasizes interactive, hands-on, project-based learning, ensuring that education is not only rigorous but also engaging and meaningful. We are committed to nurturing the social and emotional growth of our students while promoting their academic success.

Currently, we serve over 550 students in grades K-8, with plans for future expansion. Our modern facility reflects our commitment to providing a safe and enriching environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities:

● Foster a positive and encouraging school atmosphere that champions joy, self-regulation, and core values.

● Collaborate with the Director of Culture to design and execute a data-informed, comprehensive counseling program that addresses learning barriers and strives to eliminate achievement gaps.

● Provide extensive counseling services and interventions that are essential for the social and emotional growth of all students, in both individual and group settings.

● Address crisis situations employing various de-escalation and intervention techniques.

● Work in partnership with educators and families to support the social and emotional needs of students.

● Partner with external social service agencies to identify suitable resources for students and their families.

● Develop and assist in implementing intervention plans for students, which may include crisis management and safety protocols.

● Support the high school transition process through individual consultations with students and their families.

● Perform other school-related duties as assigned (arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

● A strong commitment to the mission of the Martha O'Bryan Center, coupled with a robust work ethic and a belief in the potential of all students, including those with special needs.

● A Master's Degree in Psychology or Social Work; LPC or LCSW credentials are preferred.

● Proven experience in providing social-emotional support to children and families.

● Ability to cultivate and maintain supportive community partnerships.

● Exceptional organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail and follow-through.

● Familiarity with the operations of educational institutions or related non-profit organizations.

● A proactive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure student success.

● Maturity, humility, a sense of humor, and a genuine affection for students, staff, and families.

● A dedication to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community.
